View Full Version : Tell me about Ingleburn
Hi there,
we are currently living in Sutherland Shire but can't afford to buy here, so looking at new house and land packages in Ingleburn. Is it an ok area? I've been a bit dubious about living in the South West.
Thanks :)

What price range are you looking in? Only from my experience ( I sell real estate in st.george area) I've had a few clients move out there ( ingleburn, minto, prestons) but ended up coming back as they didn't like it plus it's just that bit too far out
The crime rate there is higher than the NSW median, it's pretty far from the city (if that matters)... I have some friends out that way, some love it, others hate it but it is very affordable for "Sydney" esp compared with prices in the shire. At the end of the day when you shut the door, your home is your home! There are nicer areas in the south west that aren't quite so far out (think Revesby, Panania etc) but you do pay more. I guess it depends on what you're after, you'll get more for your money in terms of house/land size out that way, but yeah, it's not the nicest of areas, though by no means the worst either. I think there are some areas out that way with many families like yourself who move out there for the affordability.

Higher crime rate?? Hardly! The crime rate around the Maroubra/Coogee area is higher! And as for being far out... it's 40 mins to the city... hardly ages away!
I lived in Ingleburn most of my life and never had a problem! Any area has problems. Not every area is perfect!
We purchased a house 2 suburbs away and would of happily purchased in Ingleburn had we of found the right house.
Personally I would live out here over Revesby/Panania any day!
Lil M.. the schools are great. There are plenty of shopping centres and childcare centres around and generally the area is very quiet.
PM if you need to know anything about the area, I would be happy to help :)

I have also heard that they have a higher crime rate. There have been a few incidents there these last few weeks.
It's also pretty far from everything... Not a fan.

She didn't say high crime rate, she said higher than nsw average.
40 minutes from the city is far for some people, I'm 10-15 minutes away. M5, M7 is a distaster, I know because I travel it 3 days a week, but lucky for me, I go against the traffic.
It's far from the beach, especially if you are used to living in the shire.
Read this review from locals, there are mixed reviews :)

I grew up in the shire, still frequently visit as all my friends and family are still there. Ten years ago my family moved from the shire to a few acres in Cobbitty (Camden). It's not that far, all my family and I still went to see out drs etc from shire and never have a issue with it. Family business in still in the shire and they still drive out 6days a week ( but beat peak hour so early starts ). It's a **** fight the m5 always has been always will be until they have a major upgrade.
It was a lifestyle change for our family (horses). Yes it's further out but it's not that far. In the ten years I lived there with my family so much has happened for the best to the area. Crime your going to get everywhere, just like good and bad areas of a suburb, the area of ingleburn (or most of ctown are) didn't have a good rep ten fifteen years ago like most of sw or w Sydney. All the redevelopments and infrastructure upgrades in the area is well worth it now IMO.

I really don't think you can judge an area if you have never lived in or near it! Hearing a few things on the news hardly makes it a bad area. Name me one suburb that had never had any crime..

Yeah as PP said it really depends on the person. I grew up in Campbelltown and went to high school in Ingleburn and I wouldn't move back there if I was paid to. No chance.
That said, I now live very happily in Redfern which I know a LOT of people would turn their nose up at.

Who said anything about Maroubra??? But for interests sake I looked up both Maroubra and Coogee and you are incorrect- both fall well below the nsw average crime rates whereas Ingleburn is well above.
I said higher than the nsw median, which it is, look it up.
I used to regularly travel between panania and the city- takes 45 min on average. Ingleburn is further than that. But for all we know that's not important to the OP. but anyone can attest to the awful m5!

Really?? Because reading something online is always correct! Actually I have family in the mariou bra area and crime is rampant... But of cause I must be wrong because the Internet never said it ;)

No... Not because I read it online, I should have been more specific- I work for the govt in an area that deals with crime and crime stats. I also lived in Maroubra for years- its not perfect by any means!! But no one asked about Maroubra so it's irrelevant. I'm not sure why you're so offended, it was not my intention, all I was saying was ingleburn has a higher crime rate than the rest of nsw, which is an extremely checkable fact. I also said its by no means the worst and that there are areas there where families are buying because if affordability etc. other posters have said they wouldn't live there if they were paid to but you have singled out my post for some reason?
Ingleburn, Maroubra, you couldn't pay me enough to live in either of those places  but some people would probably say the same thing about my suburb ;)

Exactly- to each their own! When you shut the door, you're home! Crime rates and distance to the city where I work are important factors for me personally hence my answer to the op!

I mentioned Maroubra as its close to the city and far from perfect.
I hope the op doesn't base her decision on your figures! For such a high crime rate area I have heard of one incident recently where somebody had their wallet stolen. My mother is elderly and lives alone in Ingleburn and is never in fear.
Your trying to make out its so bad and ppl should only buy here out of desperation. I'm sure you would recommend she buys in your suburb though! I'm not saying its totally perfect.. Nowhere is, but there sure are worse places!

With all due respect, it's great your mother feels safe in her home and suburb, but in terms of making a decision to move to a different area of the city, official crime rates and things like accessibility to the city (if needed) and transport are hardly factors to be dismissed.
OP - I'd spend some time hanging around the area you are looking at to see whether you like it or not. And if you are going to have to get into the city daily look at how long the commute actually is and whether it's an amount of time you are happy with etc.
It's easy to directly compare houses, but less so things like area and transport logistics.

I haven't posted any figures? Either way, just because you personally haven't heard about recent incidents that doesn't mean they aren't happening. You can always drop into your local police station and ask them how busy they are and what the stats are for the area.
I have not tried to make out that it's "so bad" or that people buy out of desperation- go back and read my op- I'm not the only one that has mentioned the crime rate. I've also said some people I know love the area- others do not. I specified two factors that would matter TO ME as the op was after opinions.
If you don't want to believe that Ingleburn has a higher than average crime rate, fine! The OP can check for herself if she wants and you can carry on with your life! Sheesh!

Thanks for the advice but my brother works at the local police station so I don't need to drop in :) hence why if it's so bad I'm sure I would hear a lot more about it.
As for figures my apologies.. I meant statistics..

If your brother is a police officer or even a civilian employee he's bound by confidentiality clauses and can't tell you everything that goes on, but he can provide you with the same stats the rest of the force and public have access to. Whether you like it or not, crime rates there ARE higher than the nsw average. And other than saying that, I haven't posted any statistics either. May I ask why my pointing this out is somehow so much worse than anyone else in this thread who has mentioned it?
In April there was a drive by shooting into a house in Ingleburn, so it's hardly quiet and non eventful. The wallet stealing you mentioned involved a mum with a pram being assaulted- pushed to the ground- while two youths stole her wallet from her pram (which contained her child) in daylight. There was also a robbery by an armed offender at Ingleburn Fair a couple of months back at the jewellers, arson to an Ingleburn residence in June... my point is, stuff happens. It's all in your local paper.
All areas have crime, I'm not saying they don't. Where I live now is bordered by some very rough areas but the area I'm in has a low rate. I have lived in high crime areas and I would not like to again. Having our cars keyed, seeing the local area constantly vandalised, having neighbours broken into again and again, calling the police for violent domestics on the street- its not my cup of tea, I can tell you- it's why I moved. So when looking at a new area I do take crime rates into account because I want to minimize the chance of being exposed to that again. I'm glad you have not experienced any issues but to imply that it doesn't happen just isn't true. All suburbs have their food and bad. You have pointed out some of the things you like about the area, so did I. I just also pointed out two things that would be in the negative for me.
Hi there, I lived in Sutherland shire my whole life but started a family & bought a house in campbelltown as the shire is too expensive, we bought a nice house out here for the same price of a crappy unit in the shire. So it makes a lot of sense. Yes it is different to the shire but not as bad as people make it out to be. You have to start somewhere. We've been here 1 year already & loving it. Also great shopping out here!

I have lived in ingleburn for nearly 17 years. The area was really really great to start with. Its not the same now. It's not as bad as it is being portrayed though. I don't know anus stats on crime rate and I don't care. Anything bad can happen anywhere. I think it depends on the street you end up in and who your neighbours are.
Ingleburn nearly has all the facilities anyway. All 4 banks, post office, wollies, coles, country targe library even flight centre. It has a busy train station.
As I said you can't avoid bad situations if they are ment to happen. However I personally don't mind it. Bogans and criminals are everywhere!

This is a really old thread, but even so, just wanted to answer you.
Nobody portrayed ingleburn that badly. All that was said about it was that it has a higher than average crime rate. Which is most definitely does. Yes, bad things can happen anywhere, however a higher crime rate means one is statistically more likely to encounter crime in higher crime areas, so by avoiding such areas one CAN actually potentially avoid bad situations.

Good for you. P.s I wasn't referring to you or anyone just giving my thoughts to the original question. Yes after posting it, I did realise it's an old thread. I actually didn't expect any response.
Not sure why your being defensive. I'm not attacking ur stats. You and ur stats have a happy life.
As I will with mine with or without becoming a number in those stats!!!!

Wow! I think you are being a bit defensive yourself.
