View Full Version : toy box?
I am looking for a toy box to house the hundreds of bears, blocks etc that DS has already accumulated.....but wanted perhaps a soft one or one that didn't pose a finger slamming hazard....any suggestions would be highly appreciated :)
I think that in their latest catalogue IKEA had some alternatives??? I dont think they all had lids?? and I know that they were all brightly coloured...
check out their range...
hope this helps????

We have the very efficient large plastic box on wheels with a lid from Bunnings but am planning on getting one of the Ikea storage systems that actually have sliding plastic bins - so you can pull a bin full of toys out rather than the whole toy box - it is called the Trofast (pg 133 of the latest catalogue) and the bins are sold seperately (pg 136 of the catalogue). I like it as it has potential to grow with them as they and their type of toys grow. (If you don't have a catalogue check out www.ikea.com.au)

We got ours from bunnings - Its basically a big red bucket with nylon rope handles (no lid) and it was cheap, cheap, cheap (under $10) and they come in a few different bold colours. I'm getting another one to keep outside!! They also come in a smaller size which we got as well too keep in the lounge (as this is where he usually plays). They had a huge assortment of big plastic containers that would be suitable, I think you'd definately be able to find something that suits. I've also looked through the ikea catalogue and thier kids stuff looks great too!

Be very wary of toy boxes with hinged lids. Even if the lid is hinged and arranged to stay locked up, once that lock is released they often slam closed very quickly. You can buy hinge arms to retrofit boxes so that the lid can only close slowly - works a bit like the mechanism on a screen door. But I have only seen them in a specialty tool/woodworking store in Canada. If anyone wants one let me know and I'll dig the details out of our catalogue.
We use 40L clear plastic bins, on wheels, probably similar to Draught. Usually around $7 to $10 from discount stores or Bunnings and come with lids. Being clear means we can instantly find the toy DD is searching for. Leave the lids off if you're worried about fingers. Bonus of these is that her toys are pretty much already packed ready for our seemingly frequent house moves. Eventually I'd like to get or build a low wall unit/storage area that these bins will fit into at the bottom with another row of deep shelves above for smaller baskets and books. I haven't seen quite what I want at any of the furniture stores.
Ds has a long, low set of shelves with toys in them, a basket with his huge book collection and cardboard storage boxes that I've painted in bright colours for other toys. His nappies are in a blanket box that he can't open ;)
We have a few, a big wooden toy box which we have removed the lid, large plastic containers fron the cheap shop and one from IKEA. The Ikea one is great it is a wooden frame ( looks a bit like steps) and has slide out plastic bins. You can get the bins in different sizes to suit your needs.

I bought a few at Target. They have a pack of three material toy boxes that just sit up right. I thought that if my daughter ever fell on it she would be ok. They cost $9.95 for three medium size ones. They also have handles on it so they are light enough to carry around the house. :)
Rell - the storage you are describing is the one I have described in my post. (I suspect that you and I live incredibly parallel lives the more I read your posts!!)
Martha - my SIL in NZ has a similar system to the one you are describing for my nephew's room - a bench that he uses for lego, drawing etc, with three bins underneath that roll out. (and yes - our plastic storage bin is the same as yours)
The other thing we have is DD1's bed - again Ikea (we shop there a lot - my other addiction) - it comes with three large drawers underneath. One is full of soft toys, one is for the wooden railway her father insisted she needed, and one is full of plastic things that DD2 can get into and play with as she insists on hanging out in her big sister's room!
Gotta love IKEA!!! :D
Last time I was there they had big wooden toyboxes with lids, but the lid had gas struts so it came down REALLY slowly. Can't remember the $$$ though.

2005 Ikea catalogue lists the DIKTAD treasure chest at $135. It doesn't describe the lid hinge/strut system though so this might not be the same one.

I got #1 two large flat open wooden boxes on wheels from Ikea years ago. They roll under the bed, and pull out like drawers. #2 is using them now. They hold heaps, and take up no floor space.
They discontinued those ones, but I thought they replaced them with a slightly smaller plastic version.
For Duplo, I have a set of the three plastic drawers on wheels from Bunnings. I can just pull out the drawer and sit it on the floor for easy access. There is so much duplo in this house that the 3 drawer unit does not hold it all. It stands in the built in wardrobe when not in use.
