View Full Version : Does anyone live around Melton?

I can't believe how cheap properties are there. Is it a really feral area?
How does the rental market fair? There seems to be plenty of houses available... i even saw one offering a weeks free rent. Do they struggle to get people to move out there?

Does anyone from melb have an opinion on the place?
Thinking of moving to melb and wondering what are the better of the cheaper areas?

It's absolutely horrendous.
Sorry to Melton residence. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I'd even avoid driving through let alone live there.

I assumed it mustn't be very good with how cheap the properties are.
What do you think are the better of the cheaper areas?

Have you got a list? Are you definitely wanting the western suburbs? Where is work etc??

Nope no list. I have no move in October and i won't be able to get a place where i live now so i'm thinking of winging it and trying somewhere new.
I'm just looking for something affordable that's hopefully not too derelict. I can potentially transfer through my current job to down there otherwise being in a capital city it should hopefully not be too difficult to get something else.
What about areas like cranbourne and pakenham? They seemed pretty cheap.
Sunshine, st albans and Altona had a few cheapish ones too.
Are any of those places any good?

Avoid. I went to school there. I'd aim for werribee over melton.

Altona is good, I lived there for a bit and there are some really nice areas. St albans and sunshine are really bad in my opinion. I used have to drive through St albans to get to and from work and on the way to work once there was a car at the side of the road and on the way home from work it was fully stripped.

As for Melton, I've heard bad things but I'm pretty sure there are some new areas that aren't scummy, I think in West Melton, not 100% though!
HarvestMoon

Hmm.. ok. So in general west is bad?
Where are the good areas?
I've heard awesome things about the Vegan restaurants and stores down there... is it true?..lol

Well I think Altona is nice, I lived there for a few years with no issues, all my neighbours were lovely and it's only 20 minutes from the city! Altona meadows is a bit scummy in my opinion though despite being the next suburb over! But people do generally assume the west altogether is scummy!
I only know a few vegan places in the west, I think there's a few in footscray and there's a grocery store in I think it's in Brooklyn that has all faux meat and things! They're all kind of scattered though haha!

Hi,
Dont listen to these people with 1-2 liner comments and No reasonsing in negative comments.
I live in Kurunjang, its still Melton.
Ive lived in Melton, Melton Sth, Melton West as well
Melton South = Avoid, its feral, and alot of gov houses around that side.
Melton West is classed as the best. I lived there for years, it is quiet, schools are great.
Melton its fine as well.
Kurunjang is quiet, people are nice
Go to real estate .com.au and read reviews.
Nothing wrong with Melton West at all, its classed as the best suburb.
Houses are priced really well, its booming out here.
40 mins or so on a freeway to get too CBD via car.
I have 4 kids, I wouldnt live anywhere else. I dont like inner suburbs, over priced too multi-cultural for my liking etc.
Read reviews and do not accept peoples negative personal comments on area if they will not give a detailed reasoning in why.
It's peaceful out here, loads of parks, walk ways, as well as not far to get to the main street for all your shopping needs etc.

Oh ok. Melb is always referred to as the Vegan capital of Aus. I thought it would be bursting with pure awesomeness..lol
So might suss out Altona way. What about Dandenong way? Seems to be cheapish.
What sort of bad is Melton? Like walk down the street and most likely get stabbed kind of bad? I'm thinking it might be easier to break into then other areas. There are a fair few properties offering a weeks free rent and they are going for really cheap, brand new or close to it as well.

Well yeah there are a lot of vegan places closer to the city but they're also just scattered through the suburbs, I havent been to melbourne in a while though so there could be a lot more in the suburbs now!!
I have only been through Melton a couple of times but I would say it's more scummy rather than get stabbed kind of bad, but I can't be too sure! I would say Dandenong is more "get stabbed" kind of bad! There may be nice areas though but I wouldn't go to the Dandenong train station alone. I do think there's definitely worse suburbs than Melton
We were in your situation a few months back. Wanted to move to Melb but had no idea what suburbs and areas were like. We looked in the west and point cook and Werribee seemed good to us. We were told Werribee is a bit rough but had no dramas when we visited for a week.
Hubby ended up getting a job in the North and we looked at a few suburbs. We are in Epping which we really like. Housing is very reasonable and there's a lot available in the newer areas. Epping has a large plaza and everything you need in the suburb, Westfield is 10 mins away too (a smallish Westfield). It's 45 mins by train to the city. We also like Mill Park, South Morang. Doreen and Mernda have cheap rent and lots available BUT we were told to avoid there because the main road to them ( especially Mernda) is a nightmare traffic wise and after living here I'm glad we listened because we can see how bad it is along plenty Rd.
We also looked at Craigieburn which I wasn't real interested in. Can't really say why it just didn't appeal to me, looked like there wasn't much in the way of shops etc.
Hope that helps.

Ive yet to know anyone in Melton/Kurunjang who has been stabbed walking down the street yet alone house being broken into.
You can get stabbed in any suburb, respectable or not.
There is no high crime out here, none any different then anywhere else. Probably actually less.
People are working families, alot own their own homes out here, of course some rent, but it seems majority are home owners, families. Just go down to main street, high street, check shops out, the shop keepers, it will give you a feel for the area.
if it was a "bad" area, and high crime and "feral" and all that jazz, I would not be living here, nor living here raising 4 kids.
Its a great place for families. The community is friendly, and as I said its quiet at night. Except where I lived in Melton Sth, that was a "bad" area, and as I said, west is ranked as no1. And its a great place, decent rent, decent home owner prices and really great quality homes and spacious.
My brother bought his 3 bedroom home out here like 8 yrs ago, for around 160k now its worth around 300k or more.
Melton/Kurunjang areas are booming something crazy, because its not overly expensive to buy or rent here and its not all that far to get too the CBD vi atrain or car and thus is why its cheaper here (for now) but the rate its growing and booming will all the mass development going on in Melton Sth, Melton and Kurunjang in a few years time its going to be a hell of alot more expensive to buy or rent here.
I am actually bothered by a few ratings in this suburb review. They are undeniably dishonest. 2 stars for childcare? Melton has so many childcare facilities it isn't funny. 3 stars for internet? It is equal to Melbourne and will soon be one of the first areas recieving the NBN. There are options that are opinion and that is fine, but some of these star ratings are based on fact and the fact is people are being dishonest.
Anyway enough of that. I have lived in Melton for 15 years. I grew up here, and I know it well. Seeing as the suburb rating has seperate some sections of Melton such as West, South, Kurunjang and Brookfield I will try to focus on the central area, which is where I have grown up.
The first thing I'd like to say is that most of Meltons central residents have finally reached an age where they can affgord to put money into their homes, over the last few years I have noticed Palmerston street go from looking a little run down to looking beautiful because people have started putting the work in.
Anyway lets start with facilities. You will not be found lacking Parks, Gyms, and recreational activities. Melton has multiple tennis clubs, a great golf course, so many gyms it isn't funny, a fantastic all year round swimming pool, bowls, squash, horse riding schools, 3 football clubs, 2 indoor recreation centres and multiple soccer pitches. Hannah watts park is lovely and green all year round. Navan park icludes an off leash dog area, and there are many green spaces between streets which is great for young families. The high schools need improvments but the primary schools are great. Melton primary is quickly becoming a highly desirable school and many of the other primary schools have been updated in recent years. As for high schools we need upgrades. Kurunjang high school looks like it is being upgraded and Melton high has been under going construction works over the last year. If you want a catholic option CRC is great, clean and well taught. Mowbray is the private school option it is P-12 and they get results, it is expensive though and you may be better off sending them to Bacchus Marsh grammar which is a very affordable private school. There a lot of chilcare available in Melton so you will not have an issue there.
There is nightlife for the young adult, 2 Friday/Saturday night clubs and one Thurday night Bar/Club, it is also serviced my the niterider so late nights in the city are an option.
There are pleanty of restaurants and cafes, some better than others, and Woodgrove shopping centre has whatever you need. If you want more options Watergardens is 15 minutes away so you will be sure to get what you need.
I have never felt unsafe walking the streets, and I often see people out and about walking their dogs at midnight, so clearly they feel safe. You will see hoons from time to time, but it is nothing close to what you get in the Sydenham area. Sad thing is that all of that would be stopped if the police where making themselves seen.
The train service is really good in some ways, and needs improving in others. We are serviced by Vline, which I like because their trains are clean, comfortable and run on time. This issuse with V-line is service numbers though. Morning and afternoon peak are fine for commuting, but the rest of the day is 1 per hour. The highway access into the city is fantastic though. 20 minutes to the West gate bridge in non peak hour traffic.
All in all it is a great place to buy as a $300,000 will still double in 10 years.
http://localvoices.realestate.com.au/melton-melton-melbourne-greater-victoria
Melton West 93% rating
In my honest opinion, I think if there is negative comments it because people or a person have a personal issue and down rate the area, like anywhere else.
You ever hear anything unusual or constant high crimes on news for Melton?
And again if it was so bad, I doubt there would be anywhere near the amount of families here and retirees who enjoy the quieter life of less stress, noise, hussle and bussle crap etc.
Its not dirt cheap out here, it is cheaper then inner city suburbs for the obvious, its outter, not inner. However as I said, its booming so in a few yrs time, its not going to be as cheap incomparison too inner.

I live in Sunbury which is not far from Melton maybe 20 mins away.
People say things about Sunbury too but I love it here.
It's reasonably priced and although it's a 40 min drive to the city there's no hustle and bustle.
We both work at the airport so it's super convenient.

The only "scummy" place is Melton Sth. Everywhere else is fine. I've lived here for 6yrs and never had a problem. I walk at night and have never had a problem.
Wow I love the " horrendous " comment, without a reason lol.
My dads side live in Epping, Sth morang. It's the same as here, just more traffic lol ( I go there at least once a week) my mum lives in greenvale ( more expensive than the other areas) it still has it's problems.
So I think you should make up your own mind without listening to people who don't give valid reasons.
Places I suggest to avoid. Sunshine, st Albans, werribee ( depends where), Melton Sth, dandenong, broadmeadows, jacana.
That's what I can think of at the moment.
Melton is quiet. We have everything we need and if you need something else its a short drive. I've never had a problem here, I think it has a bad reputation from back in the day, before it expanded. When my family found out we bought a house here they presumed it was all commission homes. They were shocked when the visited hubby's family they expected old commission home, his family has a beautiful home 50sqs, pool everything you could want massive block! Most of his family live like that. The suburb where we bought was very new then. Since then we sold, I was going to move to be closer to my family, I was looking in Mernda and Doreen. Its a nice area. The traffic is terrible tho. But for the same price ( we are renting till we decide what we want to do) I get a much larger home brand new with a backyard for the kids ,concrete and grass, as pp said there are many parks here, just one at the end of my street.
Anyway, believe who you like. I wouldn't be living here if it was as bad as these people say it is, especially growing up in essendon and greenvale ( both expensive areas )
:)

I would consider it dirt cheap. There aren't too many places you could rent a whole house for $250/$260 these days. You can't even get flats and units for that price in most areas. The cheapness is the biggest appeal.

Well I live south east and actually a suburb right next to Dandenong. I would walk around the main street or plaza by myself with the kids but not small streets and definitely not at night. I've never seen it heard of anything dodgy happening around our streets but were also nicely tucked away.
My SIL is in cranbourne and it's booming there. There are so many new shopping strips and it seems quite nice.
I've always lives south east so can't comment on your other suburbs.

Just a had a quick look. It seems fairly cheap...not as much available as out west though.
Are there train lines/good public transport out that way?
And most importantly what side of town is IKEA on?:D
I think Sensational is spot on,
I live in sunbury and I went to Melton a lot of my midwife appointments were there for my hospital.
There are certain places to avoid but I would listen to he advice.

My in laws live in cranbourne...
I would NOT live there...
A lot of the areas are scummy and a few of the newer estates seem nice.
The transport has issues with the
passengers, bashings, stabbings, drugs... One good friend got jumped at the cranny train station.
If you want to live near there, try berwick. Also Ikea is in springvale.

Oh I didn't even think of PT there .. I don't know anyone who uses it so I don't know what it's like. I know a few people that live in cranbourne though, all lovely and none have had any drama there.
There are dodgy people everywhere though, and people have been jumped at probably every train station in Melbourne at some point.
Once you move into a new area and familiarize yourself with it you get used to it and what seems scary to other doesn't to you.

You're right there are dodgy people everything and i guess the worst possible outcome of moving somewhere that ends being undesirable is to pack up and move elsewhere at the end of the lease. Although i would prefer not to... so over the hassle of moving.

That's a bit like when they built the new one in Brisbane. It was huge compared to the old one and a lot of people no longer liked going there. I still loved it though. I had all the shortcuts to the sections i liked down pat. I could be in and have grabbed what i wanted and down at the checkouts within a couple of mins...lol
