With your kiddies how do you give them their presents - Are they all from Santa? Or some from Santa and some from Mummy and Daddy? Or no Santa?

What age are kids too old for Santa? And how do you go about telling them the 'truth' about Santa?

I was just going through DD's presents before and dont know what to do. Her other Christmases her presents have been just from Santa..

Also, 'Santa' will be dropping off a swing set this Christmas, any ideas on how I can direct her to it on Christmas morning? For Easter, I put Bunny footprints all over the house which she followed to a nest full of Easter presents...

Oh, the joys of the festive season

Maybe her present under the tree from Santa could be a card, with a photo inside of the swing set, with some identifying feature so she realises it's in her backyard?

I give DD one big present from Santa, the thing she's asked for (ie last year, a pink CD player) and then a couple of other littler things (ie a DVD, a really good quality book). From me and her dad she gets a couple of decent presents, nothing cheap and nasty, but not as good as from Santa. eg a doll, a specific toy she'd been eyeing off. Plus she always gets a new outfit from us too.
I don't know about the Santa lie/myth thing. I have always kinda told DD the true Christmas story, as well as the story about Saint Nicholas (a kind monk who gave money to poor people, and presents to orphans, anonymously) and I point out that St. Nicholas is where our culture gets the tradition of Santa Claus, who gives little children wonderful presents, to remind us of the wonderful gift that God gave the world. I don't plan on sitting her down and saying "ok Santa doesn't exist" I will answer her question truthfully if she ever pointedly asks me. But I will explain how the magic of Christmas is that family comes together, we have quality time together, we love each other and we care for each other. And the story of Santa Claus is a way to teach children that it's great to give gifts - better to give than to receive. And maybe when she stops getting gifts from Santa, hopefully she'll want to "play Santa" to needy children in our community, or needy children around the world.

sheesh I sound really cheesy and schmalzy don't I
Mine is 5 yrs old, so I know that it's an issue that is coming up soon. Hopefully she keeps the innocence and magic of Santa for another year or so.

In my family, whatever could fit in the santa sack was our santa presents, smaller ones were in the stockings... any other presents around the tree were from mum & dad (although, mum & dad and santa all used the same wrapping paper :detective:)

Regarding when to stop - I'm 24 and still get santa presents :) I worked it out when I was much younger, but I didn't let on, kept on scamming the presents you see ;) I guess my family didn't know when to stop, and now it's just a novelty. :p

We have pressies from Santa and us. Up until last year, we'd always given the 'big stuff' from Santa until someone mentioned that they don't as why should Santa take all the glory for the good pressies! I totally agree, so from last year, we the parents, finally will take all the glory for the good stuff!

When DD got a swing set from Santa a few years back, we had it at the window of the family room so she could see it when she came out of her room ... it did take a while to notice it - she was more interested in the roll on soap and lollies he'd also left  ... in the end, we encouraged her to look outside - and amongst all the excitement she didn't think twice that we knew it was there.

As for what to tell them, I won't be saying anything until she asks me. ATM I still think she's a bit too young to think otherwise, but it will probably be something we'll need to deal with next year.

I like the idea from Queenie with the photo ...

I was going to say we still get Santa pressies (well, I buy them!), but I was too :o :D ... we always get a Christmas stocking with the lolly/choc cr@p

 I'm 26 and I still get santa pressies too  so does my 31yr old DH & 32yr old cousin (cousin has no other family other than mine)...but santa only stops at my parents house to leave us stuff.

DS thinks all his pressies come from santa, he's a bit to young still to read the tags on pressies (not that I bother with them, I just write on the wrapping paper for the stuff going under our tree :o ) Once he can read I'll start having things from us and things from santa, only coz he'll probably wonder why mum and dad didn't buy him christmas pressies.

I dont remember how old i was when i found out about Santa... but i had a younger sister, so we all had to continue to pretend for her sake...

I remember the conversation the day i knew for sure he wasnt real... "Mum, Santa isn't really is he?" and she said "Is that what you think?" and i said "Yes, i dont think he is real anymore" and after that i just kept going along pretending he was real for my little sister. We all still got a few presents from him too.

The presents got less and less every year we got older tho.... when we were little it was only 1 or 2 things from mum and dad and all the other presents were from Santa. And each year, it sort of just changed... we'd get less from Santa, and more from mum and dad.

Also, the presents from Santa were always the ones we'd written on a list for Santa (our local post office used to have a "write to Santa" box where you would write down all the things you wanted and then put them in the "Santa Box" and the post office people would send the letters back to your parents, along with a reply letter from Santa)

The presents from mum and dad were other things they'd picked, or knew we wanted but hadn't put on the list. We also had Christmas stockings with our names on them, and they were full of presents from Santa too.

Im not sure what i'll do yet... I think i'll probabaly just do what my parents did for me though, i know we always enjoyed it... Santa was a big thing for us, it was fun and exciting and i want the same for my child too.

My Aunty has decided (her little boy is 20 months old atm) that he will only get 1 present from Santa, and the rest will be from her and his dad. She thinks that Santa shouldn't get "all the credit" for the presents when she pays for them.

Just shows how different everyone is when it comes to the festive seasons :)

Oops, okay thats enough from me :ecomcity: :o

we did outside toys one year..

we traced around dp shoe, cut it out then used powder in it for in the house and santa spray for outside. sprinkle a little glitter into each footprint. we did the trail from the tree to the back door. we do these footprints every year but that year we did it as a trail so theyd go to the backyard.

my kids give each other a gift on christmas eve.( puzzle, paints, colouring in book, game or something else thats a "doing" toy) we also give them a gift after dinner on christmas eve thats just from mum and dad. everything else is under the tree from santa.

I agree! I know quite a few people whose children only get one thing or clothes from Santa:no: Santa is so exciting!Every year we make the footprints and leave a beer and cookies out!The kids go to bed early and wake up EARLY, all excited about Santa coming!!LOL I think I love it even more than they do!

They do get a few little pressies from us and HEAPS of their grandparents but the major ones are still from Santa!
