Hi Pinky,

My little boy is 12 weeks old and is exclusively breastfed. My problem is I have very tender and sore nipples still. He feeds often and will fall asleep at the breast (which I don't mind). He doesn't sleep much during the day and when he is awake he feeds and probably uses me as a dummy. He loves the boob and seems to be constantly attached to me.

He attaches well and is feeding great, and putting on weight now. Is there anything I can do to reduce the soreness and tenderness of the nipples. I thought at 12 weeks it was suppose to get better.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Maclex's Mum,

It really isnt normal to still have very sore nipples at 12 weeks. Although you say your baby is well positioned it may be worth getting a lactation consultant to watch you feed just in case they can offer some tips that would make it more comfortable for you.

Also -how would you describe your soreness? what do your nipples look like - are there any squashed bits/ ridges after your baby has fed? Is there any burning or stinging? Such symptoms could indicate why your nipples are sore - for instance burning and stigning may indicate thrush. Or your soreness may be due to your baby's mouth shape ( short tongue/ high palate).

Again, it would be best to consult somebody who can watch you feed and check your babys suck as sore nipples really can be corrected.
