Haven't read through all the threads so i thought I'd just ask my question in a new one.
Is anyone else having or have had the NT scan. I just booked mine in at Mater Redlands for next monday. We were'nt offered it with Jack and then I wasn't going to do it last time but mc anyway but have decided to have it this time.
Just wondering what others are having to pay as I find it quite expensive, $170. Would be nice if this was bulk billed but I've read that it's not a necessary scan therefore not bulk billed.
What are your views on this.

I'm seeing my Doc on Tuesday to get a referral for a NT... Might just scrape in as I'm 13weeks this Saturday. I think it should be bulk billed, not sure how much mine will cost???
Good-Luck with yours:)

Jack'sMum, I find it really strange when some people are offered tests and others aren't. Your Jack is only a month older then Harriet and we were offered one when we had her. We did it last time and will do it again with this one. Any test that is offered we tend to do - only because I am of the "better to know then not to know" opinion - since losing our first I like to be prewarned about all risks etc. It is non-invasive. You have a blood test then a scan - plus another nice time to see baby growing. With my condition it is also another chance for them to check that my cerclage is holding and that my cervix isn't funnelling too early.

Hi, I had one a few weeks ago and it cost $230. Because I had reached the medicare safety net level I got most of this back.
Its not a necessity to have it but because I was over 35 (risk is higher over this age) I decided to have it to see what the odds were. The scan will not give you a 'yes' or a 'no' but it gives you an idea of whether you are in a high or low risk category.

we did it with DD#1 and we are booked in to do it again....
does everyone else get the 4D scan?? we get it at the place we go and it's really worth the money!!!!!! at just 12 weeks it's amazing how much you see!!
and like someone else said if you've reached your safety net with medicare you will get at least 80% back

Is that the one where they send you for the needle thing if they think its downs???
My first baby this year they found the problems before i had to get that done.... It had hernia, heart attched to its stomach etc etc.
This is my 4th attempt as bub #1, so im going to say no to this one unless my Ob recomends it, you get to the point where i dont care if bub is not what people call normal.... there are only so many attempts im willing to take considering how sick i am this time.....
I am getting scans every 2 or so weeks at the moment any way and my Ob has the 3D/4D scanner so i guess he can pick up obvious things...
Do you think the way im thinking is the right attitude??? Has any one else lost a few bubs along the way...
If this bub is born i wont be letting it out of my sight for a minute.
As for bills so far i have had 2x $160, then $130, followed by a few $35 then last week the kidney doc was $200.... and a few others, i will hit the safety net soon. and the final payment if we get there is $1800. But if i get a bub out of it i would pay anything.

I am having one tomorrow :smiliedance:
I havn't had the blood test tho as I am just using this as an excuse to see that all is well (is that bad of me?) I just want to see my little bean and feel reassured it is still there!
Bel, I think what you are feeling is VERY normal! I have had a few m/c in the past and so hence me wanting to see my little one NOW to know that it is OK.

Also forgot to add it is costing me $140 and the gap $60.00 is bulk billed there and then. Well worth it for my piece of mind!

we didn't do it for DD, I was considering it for this baby, but not too sure now that it will cost money, don't really have that much to play with IYKWIM I guess I'll just have to wait until they can pick up the heart beat with the doppler, then the 19 week scan:rolleyes:

I never had the option with my older kids, my doctor recommened it as i am nearly 35. It cost me $90 and i didnt get any of it back.
It was nice to see the bub, reality set in for my DH once he saw it(its his first bub).

I have a referral for an NT scan, I'm only 8 weeks but my doctor told me you usually have to book early. Others who have had/are having an NT scan - when did you book yours?

Our Dr recomends it, regardless of the mothers age, so we had it with DD, and are having it again with this one. Last time it was a referral to a specialist, but this time my OB has done the courses & does it himself. Which i am glad for, 'cause when he booked me in for last week (just 11weeks) the bubs was too small so i have to go back again this week. Because it was in his office he didn't charge me for that scan or appt :smiliedance: So i get 2 looks & photos for the price of one!
I think it's a great idea to have it done. Friends never had it, as they said they would not terminate for Downs, but the 20week scan showed some of the markers for Downs & they went through a terrible time trying to decide about an amnio/termination etc. Even though they were adament that they would NEVER terminate, when faced with it - they still needed to think seriously about it. And i just think that it would be good to be prepared for a baby with a disability, so you can be armed with knowledge before the birth.

We got our referral from our OB yesterday. Will ring and make the appointment for when we are 12wks - also gives the OB a chance to make sure my cervix is behaving before I go in for my cerclage.

I was booked for the NT scan but I cancelled it, it won't matter either way to us, and I saw bub on the scan last week so I won't have another scan next week just so I can see him again (although I did think about it!) Good luck to everyone with their scans!

I've decided not to have the NT scan at 12 weeks, I don't think it's necessary, or worth the $280 when you can do it at your 19 week scan. I didn't have a 12 week scan with DS, just the 10 week one where they did the NT scan and detected abnormalties then, so I had an amnio the next day and it was all fine.
It comes down to personal preference I guess!
Me (Kelly) ~ 27
DH (Jason) ~ 26
DS (Marley) ~ 5
EDD ~ 4th May 07

i booked my NT last week for next at 12wks and 2 days... i am 22 and the ob didnt even offer it to me.... but i think the $250.00 is well worth the piece of mind... i know everyone has strong opinions about this, my husband wont even talk about it until we are faced with the results, so i think i would like to know.. Jeski... I am also in Sydney.... Im having mine done with Sydney Ultrasound for Women... they have offices in newtown, o'connell st in city, and bondi

All I can say that having a scan at 12 weeks wether it be the NT or not, it is WORTH every cent!! :D
I am booked in Monday and I can't wait to see bubs in 3D! I didn't have it with DS, but this time I feel I need to be prepared. Mine will be $230 plus $15 for DVD.
Just wondering, do they tell you the results then and there, or do you have to wait until your next OB appointment?
WeloveHarriet
27-10-2006, 03:28 PM
Foxy - with my scan I have the blood test one week beforehand and the results are sent directly to the OB doing the scan. She tells me the results then and there once the scan is completed. Ours is booked in for the 13th of November and we are doing the bloods on the 7th.

I didn't have the bloods, but they told me that the area of fluid or whatever it is was less than 1.2 mm which is normal.

Hi everyone!!! I had the longest afternoon yesterday!!! My scan was at 5, so I peed at 3 & drank the 1 litre of water over the next hour... WELL, when I arrived for the scan i was asked to wait in the waiting area... I waited for 1/2 hour (with my bladder about to burst!!!). When it was my turn, the lady doing mine said my bladder was too full & could I empty out about a 1/4 of it? Easier said than done!!! Much more painful to have to stop peeing than hold on to a full bladder!!! Anyway, after all that it was still too full, so back to the loo again!!! To cut a long story short, I went back to the toilet one last time after that to empty it completely (aaahhhhhh!!!!!) We had no problems getting some measurements, but the fold at the back of the babys neck was another story... it wouldn't stay in the one spot long enough... I ended up back in the waiting room to let the baby settle... didn't work!
Oh, & I didn't get a pic this time!!!:( At least DH came along ( he thinks it looks like a turtle!)

Bexta same thing happened to me last year when I went for Harriet's test - but I had to wait for 2hrs!!!! This time they have told me only to drink 600ml - and since I am sneaky and a little wiser I won't be doing it until I phone the surgery 1/2hr before I am due to see if she is running on time, that way if she is late I won't burst. Glad to hear that everything looks good.

I had my NT scan yesterday and I have like 1 in 22000 chance of having a Downs Syndrome baby, I thought it would probably be a good result as I am so young but I just wanted to put my mind at ease that I didn't need to worry something else as there is well and truely enough to worry about already!! Plus it was great to see the baby again!! I did drink all of the water and I was ready to burst as they were running 1/2 an hour late but the lady told me to empty my bladder half way through the scan as it was too full so that was a relief!! Hope all goes well for everyone else in the comming weeks!!!

I am having mine done on Monday, cost $140 which isn't too bad I suppose. Looking forward to seeing bub no 2. I thought the nausea should be easing by week 12, and its just getting worse. I haven't suffered until now. :barf:

Welcome and congrats Cimmie. That's a pretty reasonable price for the scan , we got told $240  so we're not having it.
The last scan I had I honestly thought I was going to p!ss my pants! I was busting! The lady told me to empty half but I couldn't resist and let it all go, then she said it doesn't really matter anyway, and for my next scan not to worry about a full bladder. That would have been helpful before!

I had mine on Monday, they put the risk at 1 in 13800 which I was obviously really happy about not that I was too worried but still good to know
it was amazing to see bubs looking so big because they zoom in and when I asked how big bub actually was she said ' oh about 6 cm' amazing really.
it cost me $170 and I wasn't told I could claim from medicare but ended up asking and only then did they was yeah you'll get $60 back so I was a lot happier after that.
hope everyone else is doing great

I must have had a really **** ultrasounder... she didn't give me any measurements or reassuring words. I couldn't care less about not getting a photo, but at least some sort of vocalisation of what she was seeing. Not even another EDD. Oh well, I suppose I'd better make an appointment at my Drs for an update (another $55.00!).
Bexta, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your u/s. Can you go somewhere else for your next one?

I'm having the 12 week one to make sure all is OK, not to check for DS as I decided I didnt care if the baby was DS and wouldnt terminate for that reason, so seemed pointless to check.
We're having it so then we can make sure all is Ok and tell the world our news, I have heard the heartbeat earlier this week so :fingerscrossed: all is looking good.

Mine cost me $150 from just QDI (queensland diagnostic Imaging) I did have the option to get a better one... 3D but that was going to cost $250 so I thought I might just get the really good one at 19-20 weeks you get a DVD of the ultra sound and a book with a few photos in it it is $250 aswell from Queensland Ultra sound for Woman in Brisbane. Just thought I would let you all know....

When I told my SIL about it, she told me to go where she went with hers... & they bulk bill too. I think the 19/20 week scan is free anyway???
I just don't feel confident that the lady I had for the NT got the measurements that she needed...

we're booked in for the NT scan next friday @ 12 weeks. we decided to go ahead with it... even though i'm in a low risk catergory. my DP wants to make sure everything is okay. :)
bexta - i HATE when they tell you to empty your bladder 'just a bit', as if it's the easiset thing the world to do!! LOL!
