Hi all! My son is three in August and I'm concerned about his speech, or lack of it. He says words, although they are still what I would say "babytalk", like "dink", "banket", "duice". Things like that. His longest sentence is only 3 words, like "Wot wot on" , or "got toy". His hearing has not been checked, only with the screening test at birth. But I'm certain he hears as he responds and he seems to understand things perfectly well. I'm finding it a little upsetting now as he tries so hard to tell me things and I just can't understand him. I feel like I'm letting him down. Do you think this is age appropriate, maybe just on the lower end of the scale, or do you think this is unusual for his age and needs further investigation? I would appreciate some advice...

I'd go to the GP for a referral.

I can only compare with my experience with my DS who is also 3. We are able to have clear conversations with him and other friends and family can now start to understand what he is talking about. Your sons development could just be normal for him, but just to be on the safe side I would go and see the GP for some advice.

Yup - this, its hard to say because we can't hear him etc, and it might very well be normal for him, but if it isn't -the earlier it is picked up the better.

I have twins who are almost 3, one says things like "I want to go outside", "I love you mummy" "Can I have a glass of water" etc. The other says "nigh nigh" "bye bye" "bbwwww' (water) "ri kee" rice cake, "di sor" (Dinosaur), and he has what they are classing as quite a severe speech delay at this point and requires speech therapy and Early Intervention.

I would take him to gp or pead... at the age of 3 he should be able to carry on a full conversation and string words together to make full sentences... do you see a maternal child health nurse at all? or does he go to kinder or childcare or anything like that??? read many books??? if he goes to kinder/childcare maybe dicsuss with his carers/teachers or talk to your mchn if you have one? they will be able to set things up for you and that will help him and you! can other people understand him when he speaks? or is only you?

I agreed with PP won't hurt to have him checked my niece was not using her words at a similar age and needed speech therapy. Best thing ever she has come ahead in leaps and bounds and is off to school next year.

Best of luck.

Hmmm, well, that's interesting. I was fairly sure the other kids were talking, or beginning to, at his age, but I just couldn't remember so it's good to have some to compare him to. He does go to daycare, but nobody has said anything to me about it, and it only really struck me the other night when he was trying to tell me what he wanted and I kept saying I couldn't understand. It was very upsetting. I'll take him to the GP, they should be able to direct me from there I hope. Thanks for your help.
