View Full Version : How do u know if they are getting enough?
Just wondering if anybody else wonders if their little one is getting enough at the boob??
My little girl is 36 weeks and has had some feeding issues, but has just started to lastch on to the boob rthanks to the assistance of nipple shields. She will suck for about 20 mins before flaking out... What is a good feed time for you and your little ones?

my little one sometimes feeds for 5 minutes, sometimes 20...sometimes one side, but usually both. As long as she is putting on weight and is happy and content with lots of wet nappies i dont worry about it.
Hi yeye,
I too am using a nipple shield with my lttle one. He was 38 weeks but only 2.2kg so he had trouble latching on. He sucks between 5-25 mins and drains my breast in that short time. I always feel my breast before and after a feed to gage weather he has emptied it or not. He either falls asleep at the breast and i know he has had enough or otherwise he chucks a tantrum and won't reattatch and i know he's had enough.
I was worried too when he only fed for 5 mins, but he has gained 1.1kg in 5 weeks so he is definately getting enough from me.
Hope all goes well
Cheers

The length of time spent sucking doesn't always equate with the amount of milk a baby receives. Some babies, maybe a bit older though, can drain a breast in under 3 minutes! Other's take longer and it can also vary between feeds too. A long sleep between feeds will often bring on a really long drink whereas a feed following a short nap may be small. Pippa has pointed out that the weight gain is often the best indicator of whether your bub is getting enough. Also, as long as there are plenty of wet nappies over a 24hr period, then bub will be getting all she needs.
All the best and congratulations on your bubba's arrival!

Yay-that's good news for you and bub! You are right, it can be scary when you are the sole provider of food for your bub. It is also a pretty special thing!
