Hi

My son Is 2 yrs 9 months and yes he has a quiet a few medical problems.
his talking is way behind almost like a 12-18 month old his attention spans is not that great and will only come to me or my partner or grandparents he won't come to our friends when they call his name even if they are 1 mtr away from him and my ds knows our friends quiet well as they have been in his life since birth though.
Oh and his hearing is fine we have had that checked many times.

We know with his medical condition that talking may be off for a while yet even at all and even ds's Doctors are unsure weather speech therapy will help.

So i guess my question is how is your 2 nearly 3 yr old with talking and does he/she notice when a family friend call their name.

TIA.

One of mine does, the other doesn't, he too has had medical issues in the past that *may* account for his delay in speech etc, but he does have other strange behaviours. So he is being assessed for ASD at the moment.

Are there any other things that your LO does that seem unusual? Sometimes it's hard when they are your first because you don't have anyone else to compare them to.

What are his medical conditions?

My 2.5 year old talks to most people. She will act shy around people she doesn't know well but easily answers her name and age when strangers ask a few times. All extended family members she talks to almost as well as she talks to us and has conversations consisting of what she did that day etc when talking to them.

She looks and responds when anyone calls her name except when distracted by something she wants to be doing rather than listening.

Our eldest was the same but had a larger vocabulary at the same age.

Have you spoken to anyone about him not responding? Do they think it is linked with his delayed speech?

No there's nothing else that seems unusual with him he is walking fine eats fine etc and uses two-three word sentences with me and dp and is really starting to parrot us but not real talking iykwim.
but lately i have joined a mums group and there 2 yr old's are way more advanced then my ds and i guess that has got me wondering.

I am probably blowing this way out of proportion but sometimes i just wonder.

He has a under active pituitary gland thyroid issues low blood sugars spent about 1/4 of his life in hospital.

We have actually spoken to his specialist and she is so happy with him as he was basically meant to be a vegetable and now he is eating running around and is putting on weight and growing like nothing else.

So as i said it's probably my head playing mid game with me.

I'd say, if you have any kind of thought that something may not be right, then get it checked out. One of two things could happen, they could say its nothing - and that will give you piece of mind, or it could be something - and you are getting onto whatever it is early. Good luck!

My DS is 2 years and 8 months old and he will interact with everybody and can carry out cute conversations etc. He's doing quite long sentences now like "Nooo, newspaper not there, Daddy took to work... silly Mummy" etc. He doesn't ignore anybody if his name is called but I'm not sure how significant that is. He knows most colours and can count to 14. He can just about hop. Toilet trained during day but not naps/nighttime. He can pull his pants and undies and socks off but has lots of trouble putting them on again.

I don't really know if it's helpful to compare these things though, especially if your DS has had some medical problems. Have you spoken with his specialist about his development stage in specifics??
