hi everyone,

my hubby and i have been meaning to learn about cord blood for a while, and this helped us sort things out -- maybe it can help some of you out there, too:

When we looked into it nearly 2 years ago it was going to cost $4000....I'm wondering if that is still correct????

I've just looked into this.... its about $3000 for collection and 18 yrs storage!

mmm ... so that rules out private storage, but in Australia is it possible to donate cord blood publically?

We have privately stored DS's cord blood, it cost $3000 - once off fee. There were payment plans?

I was so upset to find out that my hospital didn't donate - I was so happyat the iea of possibly helping some family some where :( ..

I couldn't (still cant) afford to spend $3000 .. sheesh .. I wish that there was a simple one off courier fee.. I mean how hard would that be for the organisation to do .. surely no harder than organ transport??

I would have HAPPILY paid for a courier to run from my hospital to one that DID donate :( instead.. all that wonderful stuff was wasted..

Cord blood for public donation has to be collected something like 15 minutes after the birth (so I've heard). Hence the collections only at some hospitals and only during business hours (just tell the babies that :D).

Umm... I had my DS in Mackay (9pm on a Sunday night), it had to be picked up within 24hrs (from memory) and couriered to Melbourne! We were sent a collection box with all the necessary stuff. So i really don't see why they couldn't do couriers to the main hospitals that do collect (sorry does this make any sense? had no sleep...) for public donations? Surely it is worth a lot of money when you look at what it can be used for? The courier (from memory) cost about $175? I really would have preferred to pay the $175 and publicly donated it.

My info could be a bit old too, we really only looked into it in detail for DD1 (hmm almost 6 years ago now :rolleyes:)

Dh and i are storing the cord.
we cant afford the usual $3000+ but at cryosite (ph: 02 9420 1400) you can pay a smaller amount each year.

after the 18 years you end up paying out about $4500 but its an easier option if you don't have the cash in your pocket.

i think they have about 5 different payment plans to choose from.
