Im am planning to go to Uganda next year and do volunteer work at Amani Baby Cottage.. a house that currently caters for 115 babies and toddlers who have been abandoned or orphaned. Money permitting... I need $4,000 and Im a Uni student.

There are many horrific stories coming out of that place... like a 9 month old who was brought in who weighed only 8 pounds!!! And a 2 month old brought it by his 12 year old sister, the mother had died during child birth and the 12 year old was able to save the baby and keep him alive for 2 months, before finding the cottage. And another little baby.... 3 months who had his feet burnt in an accident... the mother abandoned him but it was not in time to save his feet, which got infected and were amputated.

Just wondering if anyone has ever been to Uganda or Africa and could tell me a little about their experience?

Hey sorry I havent been. But I'm also hoping to do exactly the same thing volunteering in 1 of the ophanages over there when I gain a little more experience . It would be both upsetting and extremely rewarding I think.

Hi woven_wings,

I live in Tanzania however I am not involved in anything like you propose however I commend you actions  .

One of the girls who works where I live is currently visiting Uganda if you have visited third world countries before and know what you are doing it is relatively safe.

If you havent visited a third world country you are probably in for a bit of a shock.

We have a small community of about 5,000 people about 5km from where I live, the school had 7 classrooms and 900 students (another 5 classrooms are currently being build). Tanzania apparently has a very high immunisation rate yet the people from the village need to go for a hour and half car journey to get their children vaccinated - the problem being many of them dont have cars. A clinic with a small maternity center is currently being build however to prevent the need to travel so far.

There are many cases in Africa when the mother ends up with fistula's after child birth and then gets abondend by their family.

There are many sad cases around. PM me if you have any questions about travelling here that i may be able to help with

Thankyou all for your responses.

I know I am going to find it a shock to my system, to visit a third world country and very hard to leave all the children behind, I think I would want to take them all home with me. But if I can do anything to make their little lives even a little better... I will do it! Those beautiful children have to go through so much, its horrible.

Thankyou Africamum... I will PM you if I have any questions that come up during my planning and researching.
