So DS1 who is 12 has started highschool this year (year 7 at his Qld school) and has suddenly been bombarded with assignments, has had nearly one a week, or maybe fortnight. He is quite smart but is having trouble organising his research/thoughts into a logical order. It is hard to know how much help to give. I am letting him do the research and then helping him put it down so it makes sense and make suggestions. It's all word processed so spelling shouldn't be an issue. He just got an A on his Japanese assignment and I wonder if I helped too much? How much input does everyone else have with their children's assignments?
He has to do Harvard referencing as well.

I only have young children, but in my job I work with high schoolers every day. I would be helping him to set up schedules and plan his workload, and then leaving the rest to him.

I agree, I would help with his schedule and maybe excuse some chores or some sport activities. Helping with the actual assignment might be not the best thing to do. Even though I did one of my daughters religion assignemts once when she had three others all due same day. I got an A- for it. so proud of me. !! haha, Marie

So not even go over it with him and make suggestions? hmm

Hello Refresh.. what I do with my eldest is keep track of what she has on, in all honesty she gets it done on her own, but I make a point to talk to her them and how she is going with them.
Re getting thoughts down in a logical order etc - I have found it helps to ask the child to explain to you about the topic. If things don't make sense say 'I dont understand that' or 'i thought we were talking about x how did we get here? lol' etc. I think by talking it through it helps get a logical flow happening.

I'm 35 and I have trouble arranging my thoughts into logical order for assignments sometimes :p
I bounce ideas of my dad and discuss the assignment which I find to be really helpful which should be fine to do for highschool as well. If he is writing it himself, I don't see an issue with helping him with the organisation of his assignments.

Hello Chew The Mintie...Cool, I do that, he has trouble putting things into his own words, he thought he just needed to look up a thesaurus and change some random words....In an assignment on politics recently, he wrote something about indigenous affairs and changed it to indigenous romantics :D I ask him to read through information and then tell me what it is about.

Thanks! Good because he really does need to be steered in the right direction. I think if I do that for a few then back off more and more, he will learn to d it completely on his own? He's only 12 and the work has just jumped up SO much from last year.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with going through it with him as long as the ideas are all his :)

He definitely looks up all the info. himself and is starting to do more and more himself...kind of just trying to steer him in the right direction in the hope that by the end of the year he wil be capable of completing most of it independently with us there just to check it over at the end.

Sounds like you are doing a great job :)
I would/do discuss the topic and their ideas and that's it. For ADHD child I do a bit more with planning help but to keep it to bare minimum.

Thanks!
Thanks also Loving 6:)
I am a high school teacher and a lot of students do not proof read their work before submitting and many cut and paste answers from the Internet. Maybe guide him in those areas.
