Can your 4 year old draw, as in, more than scribble? Can they draw stick figures, trees, buildings etc etc?

dd1 is 4.5 and yes she can draw stick figures, which are human-like, and limited other objects, tho she usually has to explain what these actually are :) .

DD is 4 and loves drawing. She draws lots of stick figures with faces, flowers, rainbows, the sun, clouds etc. She also likes drawing animals but I usually have to ask what they are.

She has also started to make up stories to go with her pictures and folds over pages to make up books with different drawings on each page as well as a collection of random letters I call her magic writing that only she knows how to read. Yesterday she made up a book for her baby brother and then "read" it to him, it was so cute.

Miss 4 loves to draw. She draws people, dinosaurs, houses, trees and flowers, rainbows, monsters, stars, the sun, clouds, Christmas trees (even in May!), snowmen, usually her drawings reflect what's been happening at home, events she remembers etc

My just 4yr old can kinda draw stick figures and face and is starting to draw more things. He has classmates (pre prep) that can draw almost anything and ones that can only scribble. It's the normal to be learning good pencil grip and how to draw at this age. Don't stress.

DS1 was 4 in September and can draw stick figures, houses (I've never seen him draw a different building), animals, rainbows. He loves to draw! At the moment it's mainly people and rainbows :)

Yes she draws circle people with the legs and arms coming out of the
body, houses, some animals, most nature stuff like beaches, trees, flowers, the sky, rainbows etc, lovehearts. Basically her drawings are very girly. In love her eyelashes on the girls she does lol. Now she is in prep she can also do most if not all letters and some numbers.

Just curious.. I know that at most prep interviews they ask the kids to draw a pic of their family.. Was interested to see who's pre prep kids actually could. Mine can't, but I already know he has fine motor delays. Just interested as he is my only child, I have no idea what is "typical" at his age.

My 4 year old ds (birthday last week) cant draw very well.

He can draw shapes and some strange looking faces lol but that's about it.

He isn't into drawing. He loves collage though.

I think she only made her first not-scribble drawing around 4-ish.

Before that it was just pure scribble... and she knew it. She was never a kid who drew something they thought was elaborate but that just looked like scribble. You'd ask her what it was, and she'd go, "I dunno... scribble?"

My DS1 drew pictures really well by 4- people, houses, trees, moon, grass, hearts, animals and so on. My DS2 is 4 now and he isn't as good- he draws very basic people (they look like Mr Potato Head people with face and body all in the one circle with stick arms and legs). I guess they are all different and get there in their own time:)

Ds 4 is pretty good at drawing. He draws a lot though. He draws people with a lot of detail and various animals, stuff from nature etc.. Other skills like counting he is very hit and miss. Some days he can't even count to ten. All kids are different.

DD at 4 could draw people, rainbows, various animals etc that were all recognisable and could write her name.

DS1 is 4 and draws nothing but circles and scribbles  he's not into drawing/writing like DD was though, though he is *just* starting to show more of an interest in drawing, so I imagine he'll be on to the infamous stick figures soon!

Not stick figures, but round people with sticks for legs and arms, or the same for a cow but she will add horns and a udder etc. lol.

I think 'typical' is very hard to define at this age. They have so much to learn and kids often focus on what interests them. I guess you would be more worried about it if he has fine motor delays.

Both DSs had no interest in drawing at 4....they would only do it if I pestered them and then its just a scribble.

Now DS1 is almost 7 and DS2 is 5 they are starting to enjoy drawing more.

My son turned 4 in march and has no interest in drawing, he know how to draw a stick figure that doesn't really join in the right spots and can do a few letters... But he is more in wrestling, dinosaurs and climbing (everything) He is doing 4 yr old kinder next yr as he is redoing 3 yr old this yr, just wasn't ready and I wasn't willing to push him..... He will learn to write and draw one day I am sure

Hi Happy2b3, my DD2 is approaching 4 and can't draw to save her life, but she has sensory issues and we see an ot fortnightly. The ot is focusing on pengrip and fine motor skills now and has definitely made a difference. Have you considered seeing an ot for assessment and a bit of help with it? A lot of ot places actually run 'school skills' workshops for kiddies going in to kindy and prep. They can be exy but worthwhile.

Thanks, you yes, he had a Aspergers diagnosis and along with as you probably know comes sensory, low tone and fine motor problems :-) This was just a general question just to get an idea of what was average and what was not :-)

Ds 5 was not really into drawing at 4 and when he did it was mainly scribble now that he is at school he loves to draw and draws detailed pictures of people scenery and his favourite at the moment is Ben10 and his aliens! his colouring is perfectly inbetween the lines and his writing & reading have improved 10 fold since term 2. This is the boy who at the start of the year struggled to write his names. Every child is different & learns at different rates & I find that girls catch on to the writing and drawing quicker then boys. Also don't be worried if he starts to write letters/numbers backwards this is normal as well.

DS at 4 was not in to drawing at all, not really interested in arts or crafts at all. Since starting school and doing Art he is finally showing an interest. He is no Picasso and I think quite basic compared to other kids his age but at least there is some interest and wanting to do it.

I've been a Child Care Centre Director for 20 years and from working mostly with the 3 - 5 year olds I can reassure you that there is a wide range of ability with fine motor skills at this age - particularly with holding pencils/pens, scissor/cutting work, and drawing. Like anything, it takes lots of practice to perfect the art of even gripping a writing instrument, then even more practice to start reproducing obects, shapes, people around them on paper. And it all depends on the level of interest as well. Some children avoid drawing like they're going to get a fatal disease from it, others go to it like they were born with Crayolas in their hand! But they all seem to get it by the time they're in year one - although still with differing degrees of skill. The best thing you can do is provide plenty of different types of drawing tools and papers to make it interesting and fun, lots of colours, textures and shapes, and some guidance to get the imagination going. I like telling little stories and then asking children to draw their own story. They come up with some amazing things. Have them tell you what they have drawn to promote their self esteem. I'm not a huge fan of colouring books but I think they're ok for sometimes (kinda like chips and soft drink). It's so much better for children to draw their own lines on paper and then colour them in if they want to. It really does improve their skill and imagination to let them try to draw freestyle rather than colour in a picture in a colouring book. In saying that, my four year old still has his Ben 10 colouring book to colour in before he goes to sleep! Anyway, I hope this helps. :D
