I don't have a camera and take all photos on my Iphone :o The poor quality is starting to annoy me...DS is blurry in most photos because he moves too quickly for it and not a lot turn out well. I really enjoy taking photos but I kind of need a camera to do that :D

I have spoken with a couple of people and they mentioned a DSLR type of camera? (or was it SLR?). Nikon? Canon?

Can anyone recommend a GOOD camera? I don't need an amazing, top of the range one, but I don't want a shyte one either.

Thanks :)

I have a DSLR (SLR is the same thing, the D stands for digital), it's bottom end for a DSLR and cost DH $600-$700ish with two lenses included. It's the Canon 550D and apparently they're even cheaper now.

It's great for what I need it for: taking photos of my children and the occasional interesting photo, plus learning how to get more out of it has been easy and fun.

When we were looking for a camera the sales rep said any SLR camera no matter the price is better than the most expensive of the digital range.
We bought a nikon D3100 and love it

Entry level dslr with a twin lens kit would suit perfectly, what will be a big change is lugging it around with you compared to camera phone which u can put in a pocket.

Im a canon girl, so i'd agree with blissedouts reccomendation with the 550D.

I've just seen the announcement of the new entry level Pentax. Fully weather sealed, and much better specs than my k-7.
If I was looking to buy I'd probably hold out for that, but I do love my Pentax

I have an older model DSLR (Digital single lens reflex) a Canon 450D and it suits me fine. I got a twin lens kit and I wish I'd done some more research and bought a better lense. I use my nifty fifty all the time.

I do think they (DSLR's) are much of a muchness if you're using them on an auto setting.

Totally agree!! Canon all the way.

Though I will say if you're not into learning more about photography etc buying a DSLR might be a waste. There are a lot of great compact cameras on the market that take awesome pics and are small enough to fit in handbag etc. look for high number megapixels and a good metering system. In addition to my DSLR I have a compact in my handbag to take random pics when I want to.

Eeeek canon!! No...Nikon for sure!
The best entry level DSLR is the D5100. Or even a nikon 1. DH has a LOT of cameras most are nikons the only ones that aren't are his vintage collectables.

Normally I'd say Canon are pretty good too but they have released a shocking 2012 camera range.

If you want a dslr you have to get a canon! But I love my canon so am probably a little bias.

I have a canon. I would recommend a nikon. My canon had stuffed up 3 times in 2 years.

I wouldn't get a full on DSLR, unless you know how to use it. SLR's don't magically take better photos than other cameras if you have them on auto the whole time. There are a few great cameras around now that are 'almost' SLR's but far better for amateurs.
We are Nikon people, but recently purchased the Sony NEX for travelling, as it is far more compact. I highly recommend you take a look at it, it takes just as good quality pictures, has interchangeable lenses, PLUS takes good quality video.

The panoramas it does are pretty good too!

DSLR's are easy to learn to use if you have the patience to mess around with them. Having said that, the Nikon range for 2012 is fantastic and the D3100 is an absolute gem for beginners and intermediates.

But it really does depend on what you intend to use it for.

While I do prefer Nikon and I do have a DSLR, I use it for landscape shots and portraiture. I use a Canon IXUS for my regular, everyday "family" shots. It's a 230HS, cost me $198 and produces superb, clear shots and the camera is dead easy to use... a five year old could master it.

So if you're just going to be using your camera for family shots and you want a clear, fine shot then a mid to top range point-and-shoot is a viable option.

I have a Sony Nex3.

It is small enough to throw in my bag, even with the larger lens attached.

the auto 'i' setting is great - but you have the option to fiddle and control your settings.
