Im not sure where you have heard them referred to as 'hormone tablets'... Clomid can be described as that but so can many other drugs!

Clomid is a tablet that tricks your body into thinking it needs to produce more Estrogen, which in turn (hopefully) means a nice folicle is produced. Many women with PCOS take this as the 'first drug' to help out however some women who dont have PCOS also take it if they have problems with Ovulation.

The tablets are by prescription only and should be taken under medical supervision, i.e monitored cycles at least for a cycle or two (they do scans and Blood Tests) to ensure it is working for you and you dont need any further drugs (such as a trigger injection if you lack the hormone to release the egg (ovulate)). You cannot take too many or you risk ovarian hyperstimulation where the fluid from many folicles leeks into your abdominal cavity which can be quite dangerous (technically it can be fatal, but luckily also rare).

I hope that helped.
