View Full Version : How Do You Get Your 1 Year Old To Eat Veg?
Hi I have a 14 month old DD who as a baby was a great eater. She would eat anything I gave her so we always gave her veg and steamed veg to self feed. In the last few months she has refused any veg except pumpkin and if I try to conseal it in rice, pasta etc she will spit out the veg. This is worrying me as I know how important veges are and she is no longer BF so I need her to get her vitamins and minerals somewhere! Any advice would be fantastic please.

What about making spag bol with lots of veggies and blending up her portion of the sauce, she won't be able to spit them out

agree with pp.. or i'd just finely grate some into the cooking therefore it's all blended together..

We make stir-fry so they have a different flavour.
DS is getting picky about veg too.

What about raw veggies? My DS loves salad so maybe try cucumber, tomato, capsicum , carrot , celery either with a light lemon , oil ( DS likes a splash apple cider vinegar) or even with some dips like tzatiki? Raw peas are sweet or even corn on the cob? Try new veggies she has never seen before maybe eggplant or parsnips, zuchini or beetroot?
Otherwise I would just keep trying, keep putting them on her tray, keep letting her see you eat them , she might just be going through a stage, just ignore it, act normal and hopefully she will forget and start eating them again!

I found out my son has a liking for some quite flavourful things and tends to like textures.
Its gonna sound like I'm a slave to the kitchen but really it doesn't take long and the key I think is not to get disheartened. Some toddlers won't like the same food two weeks in a row and if your Dd is still eating a variety of fruits, she will be ok.
I make Mini Quiche with butternut pumpkin, corn and spinach.
Or Eggplant Parmesan which has eggplant, tomato and spinach - really good alternative to pasta.
I make vegetable 'chips' you can use broccoli and cauliflower florets, zucchini, pumpkin, kale leaves and you cut the zucchini and pumpkin with a mandolin or super sharp knife lengthways and put them in a single layer on a baking sheet and brush with olive oil. Bake them for about 30 minutes then flip them over. Bake them for another 30 min until crisp.
I know it sounds show-offy but they are good and you can have some hummus dip for them too.
Make some couscous or Quinoa, chop up 2 rashers bacon and about 6 Brussels sprouts cook until bacon is crisp and the Brussels sprouts are soft. Add in half can drained and rinsed chickpeas and the couscous or quinoa and serve warm with some Parmesan cheese or regular tasty cheese.
Make mini rissoles with finely chopped carrot, spinach or broccoli or peas and mushrooms.
Mini chicken pot pies with corn, peas and carrots.
Good luck!!!

Not "show offy" at all, thanks for the ideas bohogirl

I have the exact same problem with my nearly 14mnth old. He was an excellent eater as a bub, turns 1 & now fussy & wont eat vegies. I posted the same concern a few months back and was put at ease :) & it appears quite common. Im sorry i dont have any answers or tips for you as im still struggling with him still (espec with molars) But i do still offer them & try to make lots of food out of vegies (pasta sauce, zuchinni slice, salmon & vegie pattys etc) & i hope to try bohogirls recipes. Goodluck :)
Thanks so much for all the ideas and support guys :) I was really stressing there for a while but I have a feeling that was making her do it more because she got a reaction. Loads of great ideas.

You might like to also try roasting the vegies. My nearly 15mth old has gone off steamed vegies but LOVES her roast veg.
I do the quiche also. I put tomato, zucchini, onion, celery, bacon into mine and dd loves it. I've even had friends babies devour it lol ;)

My 16mo DS is the same - used to eat anything and everything but now won't eat veg. I've found he loves slow cooker meals, so I chop up heaps of veg and some meat, throw them in the slow cooker with a tin of crushed tomato and a bit of water. The veg take on the flavour of the rest of the meal so he barely knows they're there. I still offer him steamed broccoli, or pumpkin/ sweet potato chips etc but he rarely actually eats it.
I also grate a little bit of veg into stuff I know he loves. Like a little bit of carrot or zucchini in scrambled eggs, or grated carrot & capsicum in beef patties/ meatballs/ pasta sauce. The other thing I give him is green smoothies, which he loves. I blend up banana, little bit of yoghurt and a handful baby spinach. It sounds yuck but you can't even taste the spinach, and he gets a good dose of raw greens :)
