What is Southern River like (as a place to live/settle) for young families?

Hi I live in Huntingdale but have friends with young kids in Southern river, they are happy with the area. For a cheaper area its nice schools, shops, parks ect,
resonably safe but I would suggest staying away from the Armadale end and going buying or building in the new areas of southern river as they are better areas, check out the street inwhich you wish to purchace first as their are a few bad homeswest house in the area with roudy occupants. If you have the choice of where to buy I would recomend Byford, atwell, or Canning vale but of course the better the area the more costly. Hope this helps.:)

Thanks Melbink! Your post is very informative. We will be renting. Hubby works at Canning Vale so we are moving to reduce commute time (hes currently driving about 40 mins to/from work). It would be awesome to find a 4x2 in Canning Vale/Leeming at an affordable price :fingerscrossed:

I wouldn't call southern river a cheaper area lol it's blooming expensive ,that's the new part. They have a Coles shopping centre which is quite nice and woolies just down the road. There is a couple of daycare centers and medical centers too. It is a nice central area with south street to the freeway on one side and the tonkin hwy on the other. Most of the houses are around the 500sqm sized blocks with new houses only a couple of years old and lots of young couples with kids living there. There is also Carey Baptist college which is a popular private school in the area and an huge bunnings and more shops going in soon.
The houses are about the same price to rent in canning vale but there is slightly bigger blocks in CV. Most are 4x2 or bigger. The area is pretty safe ,CV houses in the canning zone have 24 hr security patrol which means a bit less of ppl hanging around the parks etc and you can call them anytime if you think something is dodgy. There is also a nice bike path running between the parks and new parks with barbecues and tables as well. The rent is between $450- $650 for most houses but you have to get in quick if you find one you like as they don't last long atm as we have a lot of companies taking houses for workers from overseas. Hope that helps. Oh and leeming is ok but expensive and the houses are much older.

Thanks lulu 2! :wave: Really good info in your post. Canning Vale would be idea as hubby's work is there, but the rent seems very expensive.

Starting to consider South Lake as an alternative, more affordable, option. Does anyone live or know someone that lives at South Lake? We are not originally from Perth so its a little tricky finding out what areas are really like.

There is good and very bad streets in south lake, my friends used to live on a good street with nice families and decent sized houses and blocks, but a few blocks away it is bad with break ins and police always getting called out for anti social behavior so it's best to check it out first before taking a place.
Besides that they have a nice local shopping centre with chemists and newsaganet and iga and a leisure centre with indoor pool and other facilities and some nice walking paths around the lake and wetlands. It is also close to the freeway and trains with a bus service thru the suburb.
Also check out Forrest lakes , it is a part of thornlie but a newer section and is only just off garden street (2mins from bannister rd) and has lots of young families and a nice shopping centre and other facilities close by plus the rent is a bit cheaper. There is also the lansdowne estate in CV which is usually a bit cheaper , the cheaper houses are generally 3x2 but still a decent size ,it is next to the train line but the trains are not so bad as they are freight and only run occasionally and you are still in the good school zones and about as close as you can get to bannister rd. I have seen some in there for around $430 with decent sized yards for kids.

Check out Lynwood, Parkwood and Riverton too , they are the suburbs next to willetton and have some nice streets and cheaper rentals although the houses are older but they are close to schools and shopping and next to canning vale too.
