Out of curiosity I was wondering for those of you who have 6 month olds who bf, how many feeds do they have a day?

DS is 6 months and one week old. We're doing BLW and have just started solids so he's not eating much yet. I offer him something to eat once a day and at this stage he might eat/suck/chew on a little bit of his food and then plays with it. For the past month or so he has been feeding 2 hourly day and night so is having approx 12 feeds a day :O

Hi OP,

From 6 months onwards DS was having 5 milk feeds and 3 solid feeds.
A BF for breakfast, lunch and dinner followed by solids 1/2 to 1 hour later, plus a formula bottle before bed and 1 BF during the night.

He did start to feed more during the night so I increased his solids and now he is back to 1 feed.

We do a mixture of pureed meals (meat or fish and veg mainly homemade) plus lots of finger foods. It takes a while for them to get the hang of eating the food themselves and DS was too hungry to just have those so the mixture works well for us. I am increasing the finger foods and adding more texture/lumps to the purees and hoping that by 8 months he is pretty much feeding himself.

Maybe try to increase to 2 or 3 meals a day and add in some protein to reduce the frequency of milk feeds?

DS has 5-6 breastfeeds a day with one solid every morning. Also do a bottle last thing at night due to returning to work and a decreasing supply.

Thanks for the replies ladies :)

May start increasing solids and offer some at lunchtime too. It doesn't bother me too much that he's feeding so much, just worried about when the time comes to start working again (DS isn't a fan of the bottle either... Workin on a sippy cup...)

My 5.5 month old has between 6-12 feeds a day. He usually feeds about 4 hourly during the day and has a late night feed when I go to bed and at least 1 feed through the night. Just in the last couple of days he's started actually swallowing solids instead of spitting them back out, so I guess when his intake is increased he'll cut back on feeds.

My 6-month-old feeds 3-hourly during the day, bed at 7 pm, then a feed at 2 am and 5 am. She is not really eating much in the way of solids but still try a few times a day.

5 bf's per day: 7amish, 11amish, 3pmish, 6:30pm and 10pm (dreamfeed we will be dropping soon). We've just upped solids to 2 meals per day (12noon and 5:15).

12 bf's per day is a lot.... Sounds like bub Is hungry and more solids is needed?

I've started doing solids twice a day and doing purees too but he doesn't seem extremely fussed about solids atm.. Might have five tiny spoonfuls of puree and thats enough for him but that may be cause he's bf so much.. When I'm at uni DF gives him a whole bowl of puree!!

He's a very very active baby, has been crawling for about a month which is probably around the time he started feeding alot more. Also a tooth came through on the weekend so maybe that's why he's wanting to bf more lately?? Hmm.. He's putting on weight well, he's approx 9kg so not too worried. Will keep offering the two meals and increase to three in a week or so :)
