Hi there Everyone,

I have just started taking my children to a local playgroup and have noticed that alot of the mothers there pop out for a smoke while there children are playing.....i didn't really think anything of it at first until we all took the children outside to play and the mothers decided to lite up and right near the children, am i being paranoid or is this the wrong thing to do?
I want to be able to take my children to play and not have to smoke blown in there faces!
I am a smoker myself but quit while i was pregnant and only ever smoke outside when my children are sleeping.
I am just wanted to know other mothers opinions on this topic???

People can smoke if they want, I am ex smoker so I am not biased towards non smokers, but they should not be smoking right infront of the kiddies at playgroup, that is inconsiderate.
We have a couple of smokers at our playgroup and they smoke on the opposite side of the building to where the kids are so they are not exposed to the fumes.
I would be asking them kindly to smoke away from the children and if they aren't cooperative then talk to the president of your playgroup about having some rules put in place, about where they can and can't smoke.

Ohh it makes me angry, just as it does when I am at the park and someone lights up right beside our picnic. ( It is illegal to smoke in childrens playgrounds and parks in QLD), it grates me big time.

How long does this playgroup go for?
It couldn't possibly be that long that they'd have to have a ciggie!

I'm a smoker too- would love to say I quit but I'll just say I'm an occasional social smoker.
That's disgusting!
Not only is it unhealthy for the kids but it's a terrible example to be setting!
I can't believe they're allowed, let alone would want to. Can they really not go without while at Playgroup??

Our playgroup only goes for about an hour and half to 2 hours......i'm sure that the mums can last that long without a smoke!

The same thing happened to me on Monday. The smoke blows right to where they are playing and I don't want to be reathing it in either. I think they should go right away ( across the road) so they can still see their kids. It stinks.
I don't care if they want to smoke ( I used to) but not make the decision for my kids to breath it in also.
Most of the mums don't smoke it's the grandmothers!!! Sucking on a fag.

Where is the playgroup held ?
Because if its at a certain place then maybe you could find out whether there is even a total ban in place that doesnt allow them to even smoke outside !
I would really make a fuss about this normally i wouldnt care but the fact its at a playgroup & around that many kids its very wrong !

Our playgroup is held in the Campbelltown area at the community Hall.
There are no others nearby for me, so lately i have just been taking the children to Softplay on Saturdays and Lollipops on Sundays, i find that i can still talk with the other mums there and my hubby can come along as well.
The best thing about it is that it's padded so there are never any nasty bruises or grazes :yelclap:.

Thankyou all again for your opinions

i cant believe that ppl still smoke around their kids. i am an ex-smoker, quit the day i found out i was pregnant with #3, and i never would even consider smoking around my kids, or around other people that weren't smoking too. its wrong to assume that ppl dont mind when you are smoking. dont they see the ads on television about the damage that they are doing to themselves and others? i havent had a ciggerette in 12wks and do not intend on starting up again once the baby is born.:fingerscrossed: ill be happy if i never smoke another ciggerette again!!!

There are a few smokers at our Playgroup and they go right over to the road to smoke, so it's not realy a problem. Surely 2 hours isn't too long to go without one though?

hey
i am also a smoker sadly but i never smoke around my kids or anyone elses.
I wouldnt have a problem with the parents smoking at play group as long as they were a distance away from the kids.
And plus if it is at a kids outdoor park, did you know it is illegal for a person to smoke like 10mtrs or something like that near the park they must stand 10mtrs back from the park
