Hey there....

I was just wondering who has had a completely drug free birth?

I had my son completely drug free and i wanted to know if this was quite common! My son was 9 pounds!

I had a 36 hour labour and the pain never got unbearable!

I refused all internal examinations and I refused to let them break my waters.

The midwives tried to offer me gas and i had to say no mid contraction.

I am really proud that i did have him drug free because i was told it helped with breast feeding. My son is nearly 4 months old and im still feeding him.

I think the midwives only offered me gas because i am only 17 and they didnt expect someone my age to want that kind of labour. A few of my friends are/were pregnant and they all seemed to have the same attitude of "all the drugs i can get."

I fell asleep 10 minutes before i started pushing him out and i pushed him out in 20 minutes. I also refused the centosinon (the injection to help speed up the delivery of the placenta) and passed my placenta in 4 minutes unassisted!

I was interested in hearing anyone else that has had a drug free birth to see if their labour was as good as mine?

Well done on your drug free birth. Not many women could handle that, especially for 36 hours.

I had my 4th baby 2 weeks ago and it was a 32 hour labour. I've also had a 5 hour labour and the faster one was much more painfull.
I used gas after being in labor for 28 hours, I think it was mainly because I was so tired and emotionaly messed up (I didn't think it was ever going to end). I probably could have gone without the gas because the pain wasn't too bad at all.
The pain was only really bad 5 minutes before he was born, by then it was too late for anything, but I couldn't suck on the gas either because I was in that much pain all I could do was bite down on the gas pipe rather than breath it in LOL.

I think having your waters intact during labor helps alot with the pain. Also having a slow labor is better because the contractions gradually strengthen so you can adjust. My 2 short labours with my waters broken, were very painful compared to my long labors with my waters intact.

I know a woman who doesn't feel any pain during labor. She just gets a "feeling" and then her babies come within minutes. I'd feel a little ripped off if that happened to me.

Me too :D

I had a 6.5hr labour and as soon as I hit the birthing suite my midwife offered me pethidine cos my ob had said i could have it. I said no straight away and she had such a look of surprise on her face. I felt so proud!

My waters stayed intact until I hit the 10cm mark and then pushed for an 1hr. The pain never really felt unbearable to the point where i would need to 'escape' from it. I was actually quite happy in a weird sort of way to be feeling that pain - it was so special to feel that process going on.

Hey, Well done.
I was 17 and had a drug free birth. My son weighed 8pound 6ounces. I didn't even know that my water was breaking, I thought I was just wetting myself, so I went and laid down hopeing it would go away. When my sister walked in and asked me if I was alright, I stood up it just gushed out. Tha was bout 9pm, so I went to the hospital didn't feel the contractions until bout 2.30am which they were quite strong. The didn't offer me any gas or anything like that. At 6.13am Jayden-Robert was born. No tears or stitches.
I thought I done pretty well.

I had a drug free birth with DD in June. She was 10 days late, but only 3.18kg (phew!).

I had a waterbirth so I am sure that helped and my waters didn't break until Emily's head was crowning.

It is one of my greatest achievements and I can't wait to do it again. :)

Clairet... i agree with you! Having a drug free birth was one of my biggest achievments ever too!
Especially because when i told everyone i wanted a drug free birth, they all said either "you will change your mind" or "you wont be able to do it!" I was so proud!

Taddy...your very lucky!!! My son (Hunter) Was 9 pounds and i tore inside and out. It took me 20 minutes to push him out and over 1 hour to stitch me up! Although i think the only reason i did tear was because as i was pushing his head out, the midwife told me to stop. He had passed the moconium inside me and her exact words as his head was crowning were "if you push again you could kill him!" Thats when i felt myself tare! Aparently they had expected me to be there for over an hour and hadnt yet called for the ob so she told me to stop pushing to give him time to get there! Too late...next contraction he came flying out! All was well but i dont think i needed to hear that while i was in that late stage!

Nicole79.... Its like the midwives just expect you to have drugs! My midwife looked shocked too when i turned down the gas! Women have been having babies for thousands of years with no drugs!

MummyCloud...... If i had of told them my waters were still intact they would have insisted on breaking them but because i refused all internals they didnt no! I just trusted my instincts! Oh and as for the lady you know who doesnt feel any pain....LUCKY HER!!!! lol

My 2 short labours with my waters broken, were very painful compared to my long labors with my waters intact.

Very interesting to read your post mummycloud. I had two incredibly short labours - 2 & 3 hours respectively ... both induced for different reasons ... both excruciatingly painful. I didn't have pain relief with either as they were too fast and I have always wondered what a 'normal' labour was like compared to induction. It's good to hear the point of view of someone who has experienced both.

Bubbabelly ... yes I did it drug free but there is no way I could have slept during mine ... well done!

I don't know if you would call my first labour "drug-free". I was due to be induced the following morning so was in hospital when I went into labour at 11 pm. I found a midwife and told her that I thought I was in labour she walked the halls with me for about 10 mins and didnt believe me so she made me have a sleeping tablet and 2 panadols! The pills did nothing for awhile so I kept walking and rocking around maternity ward! My contractions became stronger and stronger so I found the midwife again who basically refused to check me!I think she thought I was imagining it or just over excited. At 1:30am I felt like I needed to push so she finally gave in and checked and I was 8cm dilated! She VERY reluctantly called my hubby to come in (she definitely didn't want to ha ha and by then I was very cranky with her)He arrived around 2:15am, 10 minutes after she finally called him!By then I was fully dilated and they broke my waters without really consulting me which made contractions very painful.By this time the sleeping tablet kicked in so I was passing out between pushing but after all of that Cody Norman (ds1) was born )(6lb 12and a half ounces)at 3:07am. I had a slight abrasion which really hurt so I'm glad I never actually tore! And I couldn't sleep until 10pm the next night!(Bit excited!)

But my 2nd labour was ALOT different. I woke up around 7am and knew that I was in labour.By this time DS1 was 13 months old so I put a cd on (ha ha Vanessa Amarossi) and danced around house with him for an hour or so letting hubby sleep in!Then ds1 and I squeezed about 3 litres of orange juice! Please don't ask me why!Hubby thought it was great waking up to fresh oj and a happy dancing little family!Anyway a friend of mine came over about 8:30 for a cuppa and just so you get my drift I hadn't told hubby or friend that I was in labour (a bit silly yes but after first experience I wanted to put hospital off for as long as possible!) :rolleyes:My friend left and around 9:30am hubby noticed me rubbing my back and gripping kitchen benches quite regularly so figured out what was goin on!(I had told everyone that I was going to have a homebirth so I didnt have to go back to hospital!)So hubby rang his mum and she got there around 10am and started packing my hospital bag  We got to the hospital around 10:30am and I was fully dilated! They wanted to break my waters but I refused, I was VERY determined to do things my way this time!!My waters broke on their own on first push(ha ha spraying midwife which was dreadful at the time but sorta funny now  )After 2 pushes Dylan Stanley(DS2)(7lb 8 ounces) was born at 11:09am. A lot more relaxed labour then the first one!!

I am due with 3rd bubs in 5 wks and plan to do (hopefully) pretty much the same with this labour ha ha maybe not the orange juice though! But I will definitely remember to pack my bags first!!

My first labour was induced due to pre-eclampsia. A very serious condition but I still feel as though the induction was convenient for the Dr at the time. My own GP/OB (whom I adore) sent me to hospital to rest for a few days at 39 wks as my BP was climbing high. The next morning the attending Dr decided on inducing me, much to my surprise. Off to have my waters broken-the most extruciating pain of all- followed by a syntocin drip. I spent 12 hrs in agony with no flowing or gradual contractions, just 1 long horrible pain that grew greater each time they turned the drip up. 'They' decided I needed an epidural as my BP was skyrocketing and I was in too much pain to care. Of course this meant I no longer had any sensation and ended up falling asleep so Dr was brought back in to perform an episiotomy and forceps delivery. When I was handed my son I was so ecstatic I didn't care about how he had come to me. This was fortunate as I didn't feel ripped off at the time and was so focused on my new babe it all became irrelevant. To this day though, 7 years later I am still very aware of the scar tissue left by the cut and it oftens feels sore when I get my period.
Babe no.2 was a different story altogether. I used a birthing centre, took along a girlfriend who is trained in Reiki and massage among other therapies, as well as my husband and had the most amazing natural birth. My hindwaters began trickling about 3 am and I had a show, so at about 6am we went to the birth centre for a check. A Dr was brought in to examine me and asked, with his arms folded, "Why do you think you are in labour?" Because I know! Anyway, home for a few hours then back to the birth centre where I had a 4hr active, progressive labour that culminated in my waters breaking at the last moment and a beautiful little girl within 25mins of that happening. No tears, although I was a bit afraid my scar would open, and no stitches. Amazing how all the pain 'down there' 1st time was due to the episiotomy, not the birth process as I had thought at the time. I was home the next day and happily settling in with my new babe and 2yo son.
Babe no.3 is due in about 10wks and I have full intention of birthing drug free again. Nothing beats the high of drug free childbirth!
I have an elderly friend who has 5 grown children but she still remembers that after each birth she wanted to jump in the hospital and start singing louding
"I am Woman, Hear Me Roar". Here, here!

*does a double take*

5% do it drugfree in hospitals?! Is that true?

That is, quite possibly, one of the saddest things I've ever heard.

Well, in the immortal words of Greenday, "I wanna be the minority"!

That makes me one of that fifth percentile (I was in a lovely Birth Centre, but it was within a busy public hospital). :D Totally drugfree. Was given gas at one point; used it only to bite down on the nozzle thingy. My baby was born alert and ready to interact and feed immediately. My natural high was a moment of pure ecstasy.

It's not only possible, in my mind, it's simply the way it's done. :)

Cheers,

Katharine

I also had a drug free birth, I was in labour for 18 hours I did end up having my waters broken as i was a week overdue and went to hospital thinking my waters had broke but it was only my hindwaters.

I had a little boy 9pound 6 ounces. It was the best experience ever, yes it was painful and the fact that i had such a big baby when i am quite tiny, i would definatley do it again drug free!:)

Both my births were natural drug free.

1st labour 4.5 hours

2nd labour 5.5 hours with twins.
Was proud I could have a natural drug free birth with them as the doctor kept telling through out my pregnancy that the odds were against it.

Hey Hollie, Congrats btw. Im 19 & also had a completely drug free labour included no gas/air etc.

I used the bath, shower & walked the halls on some occasions. I also dislocated dozens of joints, popped my back vertibraes out of place, cracked two ribs and tore horribly & yet feel so proud to have gone without any pain relief. :) It is deffinately empowering!!

To be honest I must add it was the worst pain in my life though due to my joints & bones cracking :(... But yes I would do it all again.

Hi, I am glad you were able to have a natural birth and all went well for you both. Congratulations is not a word I would use though, as people say that to me about DD2s birth and I don't think I deserve it. I had a much better, much less painful labour with DD2 and that is why it was drug free. However DD1s labour was complicated, posterior, very long and I didn't dilate more than 9cm without the epidural. I think EVERY mother should be congratulated as however they birth their bubs is obviously the right choice for them and their baby.

I had the lot including epidural with DD1 and nothing with DD2. I don't think you can compare different people's labours or pain thresholds as I know that it can be two extremes of pain with the same mother!

That was not meant to sound harsh, but I think we all deserve a big hug :hugs:

I noticed that, but it's still relevant and we always have new members joining, so great to hear from them!

My second was drug free- 2 hour labour and felt fantastic (had very similar first to Funkychicken) so felt great after that experience.

Third could have been, but I couldn't push the 'boofhead' out:rolleyes: - never had the urge with any of them  so actually asked for forceps and had some gas and a block with that. It was only an hours labour, so maybe I should have kept going but didn't consider it at the time.

Not with my first, no. I had an epidural with her.

But my 2nd bubba was completely natural, only me, my birthing pool, and the air I was breathing :) I also refused syntocinon, and birthed the placenta naturally too :)

DS2: 10P 6oz 4 1/2 hours of Labour

DD was born after a 6 hour labour - I spent most of it in the shower either at home or in the hospital. I almost asked for gas when I was in the hospital as they made me lie on my back for a while to be checked - and that was really painful. Luckily my support people got the midwife to let me into the showers and that helped a lot. I gave birth in the shower standing up - they just turned off the water when the time came to birth. I did sustain a 3rd degree tear, but I had such an awesome birth experience - it was all that I'd hoped for.

DS was an unplanned homebirth as I had a 1 hour labour with him and it was only after my waters broke after 30 mins of contractions that I knew that it would definitely be happening that night. It was very intense, but again I headed for the shower which helped a lot. Also my Mum was there and she reminded me to breathe slowly and deeply - which was great too, as I was shocked by the power and intensity of the contractions which were coming thick and fast.

Luckily my reading about active birth helped me as I knew when I had the urge to push I wasn't going anywhere and got my DH to call an ambulance which arrived just in the nick of time. I birthed on my back in our bed. This time I got a 2nd degree tear, but bubs and me were great and we got a fantastic photo of our family including our DD soon after the birth with the paramedics- everyone in it is radiant.

Yes, twice so far.

Soon to be a third time.

DS's labour was about 8 hours from start to finish, DD's was about 5. :)
ETA: Both of mine were 8lb 11oz (which is HUGE for my family) and the pain was pretty intense but I dealt with it okay.

With bub no 1 (Maternity birth 12 years ago) I had some gas. It was gross and rubber tasting so gave that the heave ho within the 5 mins.
Labour was pretty good at 5 hours.Bub was 7lb 12oz.

Bub 2 and 3 were both homebirths so no pain relief of any type.
Labours with both of them were both 2 hours. 7lb 15oz and 8lb 10oz.

Bub 4 (Hospital birth) I had a taste of the gas as I hadn't slept in 24 hours. It did no good but made me more tired so gave that one away.
Labour was 4 hours and bub was 8lb 11oz.

Very lucky also not have any stitches or tears with any of the children too. My SIL's only child, she ripped from front to back! She said it was worst than anything shes ever experienced, including the labour of bub.

I had four drug free natural labours under 10 hours. I rather feel the pain/discomfort than take drugs. I had gas after cos screaming and stitches don't mix apparently. I refused Panadol though. (Err  not sure why they offer that). My last labour was very quick at under 2 hours. Not having observers was the best pain relief ever. I was in the pool for about 30mins before J was born. Birth was painless.

All of you are a great inspiration to me. I am planning an active drug-free birth at the Gold Coast Birth Centre in March with my 1st bub, a little girl.

I am reading everything I can get my hands on about active birth including trying to teach myself Hypnobirthing (only due to cost of doing a course, didn't realise it would be so much so hadn't saved for it doh!). I'm also doing prenatal yoga to help with positions during birthing of my bub.

I do not like to use the word "labour" as all I think of when I hear this is the term "hard labour" & I do not intend for my birthing experience to be hard at all. Rather I hope it to be a joyous occasion not only myself & dh but for our baby as well.

If in today’s day & age we weren't taught from a young age that "labour" was so hard & painful then I believe that every woman would be going drug free & experiencing little or no pain. I totally believe in the "Fight or Flight" syndrome in birthing. That is why if we all had access to one on one care with a midwife/birth attendant then birthing would be much shorter & much less "traumatic".

Anyway as you can tell I'm very passionate about the rights of women being able to birth how & where they like. It's our body & our baby so please leave us to do what nature intended us to do.

Thanks again for your inspiring stories & I hope to had my own in just a few short months. :flowerz:

I had planned not to have any drugs at all. Most people were very cynical, and said that I'd be screaming for an epi as soon as I walked through the hospital doors! I originally wanted to have a water birth but couldn't get in to the birthing centre.

Even though I was very determined to do it naturally, lots of people were being negative and it started to undermine my confidence. However, I'm happy to say that I got through with nothing except lengthy showers and hard massages from my hubby. I felt AMAZING afterwards, like I'd just scaled Mount Everest!:yelclap::yelclap::yelclap:

And I was very smug when I told my cynical friends of my fantastic birth experience;)

Mine was almost drug free.... but it's not something I wear as a badge of honour. I find it a bit odd to be honest to be proud of having no drugs.

I was drug free until after pushing for hours and hours, as his head was so big, I finally agreed to a caesar, so got the epi for that but then bubs moved slightly so didn't need it afterall and he was born a couple of minutes later.

The biggest 'pain relief' for me was total silence, dim lights and no on lookers!

For Connors birth I used gas, ditched it when it came to pushing. His birth was only 5 1/2 hrs 1 1/2hrs of that pushing.

Olivers was natural waterbirth at home so no, no drugs. His labour was 16 hrs, only 4 min pushing.

i had a natural birth with no pain relief. i had a 12 hr labour and could not push bub out pelvis too narrow-so had a forceps birth and 2nd degree tear. natural birth totally overrated in my opinion the most painful experience of my life. will definitely be asking for epi straight up next time/if i can bring myself to do it again. dont feel proud think its barbaric that we have to go through that without any relief.

We labored at home (10.30am show) arrived at the B.C. RBH five minutes before he was born (6.14pm)

I refused any drugs leading up, so I had no painkillers or intervention (I did my own checks hence I knew where he was and when he was going to come out!!)

We had a natural third stage and I used breasting to help contract my uterus and hence stopped them from performing a G.A. to stitch me up (they thought I was a 3rd degree tear I did not agree and asked to wait the full 20min breastfeeding time to help reduce my blood loss and what do you know I was right!!

Unfortunately we then had a 4 hour wait, for the 2nd degree tear suturing, so I was not "numb" anymore, though I still refused the gas for help during the local (yes I had to have local, I'm afraid I was not that strong though I wouldn't have if it was immediately after birth) instead I looked at my husband and newborn son thinking how clever I was, sucked on ice and they used alot of cold saline to help numb me during the local and suturing.

I didn't do this just so I could so brag, I did this because I knew I could and I wanted to feel all of it and be completely aware of this journey and I'm so very very grateful that I did believe. I loved it all, every minute of it... learning to BF was a different story, though after 3 month of syringe/breast feeds we did that too for the next 1 1/2 yrs and loved most of it :). I allowed myself to just go with it and while it was at times intense (when he did a 360 turn) I didn't think of it as pain I thought of it as part of the journey of having a baby.

In return for this was given a very alert, happy, and calm baby, to this day is a dream, 95% of the time and the biggest high i have ever felt!!

with Aby i had no pain relief but with Rowyn a had morphine and a epi!
with Rowyn i had cascading contractions that lasted for 7-8 minutes with 10-15 second gaps it was just horrendous!
but i cant say that the drugs effected my breast feeding

Hey bubbabelly,
I was induced as i went 42 weeks with absolutely no sign of bubba, i went in to hospital on 18th May (my birthday!!) and they gave me the gel at 8pm and i started having contractions at about 11pm and my waters broke naturally at 12am... i had absolutely no pain relief, the midwife offered me gas and i took one suck on the tube and it made me throw up so i didnt have anything more, as i was pushing my son out the midwife told me his shoulders were stuck in my pelvis so i had a nurse SITTING on my belly and me pushing at the same time to try and force his shoulders out of my pelvis... that didnt end up woking so they had to vaccuum him out until his head was crowning and then i pushed him the rest of the way out.. My beautiful son was born at 8.58am on the 19th May weighing in at 4.275kg (i think thats 9 pound something...?) and measuring 53.5cm.
Going natural was the best thing i ever did and just like you, when i would tell people i was hoping to have a natural birth they would say "you will change your mind as soon as your waters break!!" or just laugh at me but i showed them all!!
Im very proud of having a drug free birth as i myself thought i could never do it...it was painful i must say, but not unbearable, i would do it in a heartbeat if i fall pregnant again.
People have told me that if ur induced its a lot more painfull than if you go into labour naturally, and if i didnt think it was unbearably painfull being induced, i would love to do it naturally!! As for breastfeeding i only breastfed for a month as i was very uncomfortable with my baby sucking my boob, i know its a natural thing but i just didnt feel right...

Anyways just thought i would share my drug free birth with you and it would be great to keep in contact as we had similar labours!!

I had the same with my son. The contractions became 'full-on' really early and they didn't have much of a break between them. it was horrible. I felt very out of control and I do believe that a big part of that was the pethidine and gas I had.
When I delivered the bub I had lost I only had panadol, and while the pain wasn't as intense for me as a full-term labour I felt a lot more in control of it all. I will definitely be trying my hardest to not have any drugs this time around.

hey well done i went into labour on the tuesday morning contractions about 10 - 15 mins apart this went on till fri 3am ( stayed at home the whole time, wanted to stay at home for as long as possible) by then had had enough with having no sleep. Got to hospital waters broke as i got into birthing suite, loved the shower that much that i stayed in there till i needed to push ( about 9am),didn't really feel the need for any drugs and wasn't offered any the shower was great pain relief. Now pushing was the most exhausting being so tired i was briefly falling asleep between contractions, after pushing for two hours lincoln was born at 8p 15oz with only one graze, no tearing. I was on the biggest high for hours, i have heard that drug free births u get a lot bigger high than if u had drugs. Giving birth is one of the greatest experiences and doing it fully aware of your surrounds and being in control is so liberating and rewarding.

I had an exstatic/orgasmic birth. Def. wouldnt have happened if I wasnt completely alert and raw for the amazing moment.

I would give birth everyday if I could garuntee it would be as great as my first. And the baby that I got out of it wasnt too bad either ;).

Looking forward to many more drug free, natural labours  .
