With my first 2 children i just went off the pill and got pregnant straight away, I did not go back on the pill after dd2 and dh and i have not been so carefull recently and have deceided to start ttc #3 in december. I have been reading all these threads and have no idea how to go about testing when i am ovulating.

Basically, your temperature is lower during the 1st part of your cycle.
A womans early morning temperature is usually just under 37.0C. It usually drops between 0.1C - 0.2C at the time of Ovulation.
When you O, usually half way through your cycle, your temperature will drop followed the next day by an increase in temperature above that previously recorded. During the 2nd half of your cycle your temperature will be higher than the 1st.
Once you start charting your temperature you'll begin to see this.
I take my temperature in the morning as this is meant to be more reliable. But don't eat, drink of shower or smoke before taking your temperature. Put the thermometer to the side of your mouth under your tongue and then detail the result on your chart.
I'm using 'Maybe Baby' saliva kit along with taking my temperature.
Also, Sperm is meant to be at it's best in the morning and orgasming helps push the swimmers along to the egg.
Good Luck :)

hey there,
the easiest thing to do is go to www.fertilityfriend.com (http://www.fertilityfriend.com) there is a whole heaps of FAQS there and the infomation is awesome and very helpful. You can sign up for free on the site, but after your free VIP trial it will go back to the basic membership which is ok, but i suggest paying for the VIP membership, it doenst cost much, and their site is very secure to pay with a credit card. I have done it about three times now.
To get started though, i suggest you:
1. Go to your chemist and buy a BBT ovulation thermometer, i bought a surgicare one from the pharmacy and its very good. Its white with pink on the end where the battery goes.
2. Sign up to Fertility friend, and do the free 20 day charting course.
And then go from there.
Sorry about the mammoth post, hope it helps

I have read that you get the most accurate reading if you take it just as you wake up before moving at all. I tried this and I get a very nice graph, providing I take it at the same time every day.
I think fertility friend confirms O by a rise in temp for three consecutive days.
btw. I used a el-cheapo thermometer (the $5 variety from the chemist) rather than an expensive BBT thermometer, and it worked just fine for me. It is only accurate to 0.1 of a degree, but you can see if the mercury is somewhere between one marking and the next, and make a good estimate to 0.025 of a degree. My temps are 36.5 before O, 36.3 at O and 36.8 after O, so obviously this thermometer was accurate enough for my cyces.

Just re-read my thermometer instructions and I can't see the bit I thought I saw about not taking my temperature imediately after waking up so I'm going to try it just after waking up. This would be alot easier. I've edited my prev post as I don't want to mislead anyone.

 No worries. Just out of interest, were you getting a nice plot reading it after getting up? I imagine as long as you did the same thing every morning, it'd still work...?
Taking your temp first thing in the morning at the SAME time and before getting out of bed, having a drink etc is the ONLY way to get accurate results. If you cant take it at the same time, take it as soon as you can and note the time difference, dont alter it at all (some people say to alter it at say .5oC every 30mins or something).
And remember recording your BBT will only tell you when Ovulation occured in retrospect so you have to do a couple of cycles to see if you O regularly. You can use OPKs (or Maybe Baby) around the time you suspect you will O as they will give you more of a pre warning.
Hey W&H we have the same BBT Thermometer

I've not been charting for long and had a cold one month. My temperature soared! My charts so far do indicate that I'm regularly Oing mid way through my cycle as there are definate 'dips'. My charts do look a little bit like a mountain range with higher peaks to the right.
I'm interested to see what the charts will look like in future, when taking my temperature after waking up, when I compare them.
