View Full Version : What do you wear when you're breastfeeding?

I've been thinking about what I am going to wear after bub is born.
It seems that maternity clothes are everywhere, but clothes that give you access to breastfeed are not.

What do you wear? Did you buy a whole new wardrobe of nursing tops, or only wear tops that can be unbuttoned, or did you just pull up your top? I don't know how much I want to flash my stomach at everyone though!

I'm only 10 weeks pregnant but I am thinking about this now - I don't want to be stuck with a new baby and absolutely nothing to wear.

Strapped tops/maxi dresses etc that can be pulled down over one breast or layer a stretch singlet under a another top (flowy or tshirt etc) and lift top one up over breast and bottom garment down so u don't reveal tummy OR much breast.

I don't personally layer because its too hot and I also don't cover baby or breast, I wear maxis or strappy things and just pop a boob out the top :)

I would wear whatever I normally would, If I couldn't unbutton or pull the top to one side then i would lift it up, if you feel uncomfortable flashing your tummy there are feeding cubicles in all parents rooms or you could get a breastfeeding cover.

Most maternity singlets and tops have the option to unbutton of pull aside a part of the top allowing for discreet breastfeeding so when looking for maternity wear look our for items that can be worn later for breastfeeding.

I wear whatever I would normally wear, but with a singlet underneath. That way I can pull up my top and pull down the singlet. If I am in a tight dress or something I can't pull up then I just pull my boob out and cover the top of it with a wrap but not bubs head coz she hates that. I didn't like the style of any of the breastfeeding tops so wasn't going to wear clothes I didn't like just to feed.

I got a few feeding singlets from target and then wore different cardigans over the top. There are these tops you can get I think called milk tops which go under your normal tops with holes where your boobs are so you can lift your top up but don't flash your tummy, I never got any as I only found them when ds was 6 months and was not expecting him to still be feeding at 1! I really liked that idea though, it basically allows any top to be a feeding top! I have only seen them for sale on the net.

^^ This. Never bothered with covers and the like by the time there is top and baby you can hardly see anything. I did have some breastfeeding tops but I found that got saggy and lost their stretch quickly, but they were great for maternity wear lol

I've got a few BF/Maternity tops that I've been wearing.. Or as a PP said a singlet under a normal top so I can just lift the normal top and slide the singlet down so my tummy is still covered.

There aren't many BF tops to choose from in general stores.. I've got a couple of bonds ones that are about $25ea that I like but as with most maternity clothes in the big shops they only come in black and white!!!

Whoever designs these clothes must think we are a dull boring bunch that hates colour!!!

I just wear a regular top and pull it up to feed. My son covers up most of my exposed tummy.

I wear what I would normally wear but just add a singlet underneath. Then just pull the singlet down and top up. That way my belly and boobies arent exposed. Found it very discreet and people couldnt even tell I was feeding! :)

I am a tee shirt and skirt kinda woman so I would just pull my top up. Often I'd wear a nursing singlet underneath to cover my tummy and keep me warm :)

I have never owned a bf top in my life and I fed for over 10 years and I am about to start again any day now.

I just wear shirts and bottoms (pants or skirts). I just lift the top and feed.

i wear a breastfeeding singlet every day! initially, i wore breastfeeding bra, bfeeding singlet and cardigan or zippered hoody.

now i will wear t shirt or other top (without a zipper) over the singlet.

my tummy has a lot of stretchmarks and excess skin so i don't want to expose anybody to it.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

That is relief to hear that most people didn't just wear nursing tops all the time. I was thinking that this is going to be the start of a highly unattractive couple of years if I need to wear those tops everyday! :D

I've tried 'nursing' shirts but the v neck ease of access was to revealing for me,

I wear a nursing singlet and a t-shirt

I bought loads of supre/giodarno singlets in various colours and wore them underneath other shirts. That way I just lifted my top shirt/blouse up and pulled down the singlet underneath. After a bit the necks of the singlets stretched sufficiently enough. That way I got to wear bright colours rather than the traditional black/white/stripe crap.

strappy maxi dresses are great with a cardi in winter and a scarf to cover any boob if it bothers you.

I just wear all my normal clothes. I suppose those BF tops would be nice but I can't afford them. You can't really see my stomach when I lift my top up as DS is laying there.

I find people try desperately to avoid looking at breastfeeding woman anyway! It's so amusing :p

I hear ya Sista!! Bub is 10 mths and I am sooooo sick of wearing black and white!!! Everytime I see a new style of bonds bumps singlets I get so excited I do a little dance - hubby thinks I am nuts!!

Btw, I always just did the two-top trick and Muslin wraps, but at nine months I finally had to buy a proper bfing cover as Missy kept getting distracted during feed time and leaving me very exposed 0_0 BEST THING EVER!! I got one of the kiss kiss ones with wire at the top so I can have eye contact while feeding! I love it so much - I wish I hadn't have been so cheap and just gotten it from the beginning :-/

I got one of these online, best $20 I spent. I can wear any of my current tops I already own over the top of it.

When I was breast feeding I found it hard to find the singlet tops in my size, so I ended up buying shirts with buttons down the front that I could easily undo and do up as I needed. Plus I can still wear them all now.
