I went to the RSPCA today to get a kitten for the girls...

We picked one out and then went to do the paper work, and they asked which kitten would you like and i told them. The lady behind the counter was so rude, she said did the girls go near her? and i said yes and she goes that strange it doesn't like kids. (the girls were carrying it around) i'm thinking maybe it doesn't like you.
Anyway we went to start filling out the paper work, and she asked if i had any other cats, and i start no, and then she goes do you rent? Why is it her business... so i answered the question, and she goes you need to bring in your tenancy agreement WTF!!! that is non of her business...
Anyway i lefted with a scream 3 year old because she was heart broken..

Has anyone been asked for they tenancy agreement when purchasing from the RSPCA?? I was just trying to save a poor kitten life that would be spolied rotten...

The way she spoke to you was very rude but yes they do need to see your rental agreement to make sure that pets are allowed. Lots of people who are renting get a pet, find out the owners wont allow it and take it back which is bad for the animal and hard for them to rehouse the pet as it is now older.

Hope your next visit is better :hugs:

I worked as a volunteer at RSPCA and yes we did ask for rental proof. We didnt want to see animals returned when they were a bit older becoz if they were returned as adults it generally meant death for the animal :crying:
**No one (generally) wants to take home an adult animal, they want the young cute animals without realising they turn into adult cats/dogs etc**

It was a bit rude how u were treated but the Q about a rental cert is true and real and im greatful for it.

Hi,
I am a vet nurse and I get a bit crabby just dealing with pet owners and there lack of care on a daily basis, I think being a volunteer at the RSPCA would be a horrible job and i give these people so much praise for what they do, I have often had people come into my work that have obtained a pet from a rescue place and then want to return it as there landlord won't let them have it or it is too much hard work, these people have to put happy healthy animals down every day due to us idiot humans not sterilising our animals and then dumping them or giving them up, or they have been so badly treated they are not able to be rehabilitated. I reckon I would probably not be too pleasant after a few days of seeing animals treated so badly, i am not saying she shoudl have been so rude but put yourself in her shoes, maybe she had just seen an animal that had been badly treated or had to deal with a horrible person. They offer an invaluable serivce and just want the animals to go to the best home, I couldn't do there job without killing someone. Sorry you had a bad experience.

I am a volunteer at the RSPCA :)
I find most of the people working there are pleasant and are just trying to help animals. It is disheartening sometimes when you see so many beautiful animals are being put down, for no good reason, and for the most part I would suspect that the RSPCA is just trying to ensure that animals go to a good home, and are well looked after, and the owner understands their responsibility towards the new member of their family. It's not that 'they should be happy' for anyone to take a pet off their hands, :shame: they actually care about and have an interest in what will happen to the cat/dog/bird/rat etc.... and want to ensure the continuing welfare of the animal. The questions and forms may seem irrelevant and intruding to you, but they are a necessary part of the adoption process.
In my opinion it should be illegal to purchase any animal without some sort of investigation into your suitability for pet ownership. It's not just intentional cruelty that harms animals, sometimes it's ignorance or neglect.

Mummyof2 - what happened to your last kitten?

The people at the RSPCA are wanting the animals to have homes for LIFE. There is a strict process that each potential owner has to go through to make sure that the animal will have a safe and secure home forever. The RSPCA would need to know that you were allowed pets at your residence, or else what is the point in them giving you the cat, then having you return it a few months later because you got in trouble off your landlord.

I know a lot of people who get a real shock when they go to an animal shelter to pick up a pet, only to be told they have to get a property inspection and all of that. It seems nosy but it is nesissary in making sure that each animal goes to the right home for life.

I really hope that you persevere and get your new pet from the RSPCA or any other abandoned animal shelter. Its not these animals fault that they are there...all they want is love and to be fed and homed properly. I hope everyone who wants a pet goes to shelters instead of buying from pet shops. Pet shops just contribute to the over population of unwanted animals (an of course the idiots who dont act responcibly).

I think it is great that they ask about rental agreements... I think it should be a legal requirement for any pet ownership.

When I was a child I had a cat named Toby whom I loved so very much. Unfortunately, my mother never really investigated with the landlords whether we would actually be able to have pets (I also had two guinea pigs). After two full years of loving and getting quite attached to my Toby, the landlords found out about him and we were told that he had to go. We spent weeks doing everything in our power to re-home him, but nobody wanted a two year old cat.

In the end, my mother made the hard decision that Toby had to be put down and I'll never forget the day when we drove him to the vet, knowing that I would never see him again. It was honestly one of the worst days of my life, because I could not (and still can't) fathom why my cat was being killed when he did nothing wrong.

It still upsets me to this very day...

So Mummyof2, I'm sorry if you felt you were treated badly by the staff at the RSPCA.. but they really do have an impossibly hard job... and everything that they do is for a reason. I respect them 100%

hi mummyof2, i'm sorry you had a rude experience at the rspca, i know it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, i had similar experiences with the canberra rspca when adopting my own dog from there, and even when i was a regular volunteer dog walker they were often quite abrupt and rude and acted as though i was going to steal every dog that i took out for a walk! i think they just go a bit nuts coz they see pets being treated badly all the time, and i think it's great they ask for rental agreements (i remember i had to show my rental agreement when i adopted my dog in 2001) but that's still no excuse to be rude to you, i quite understand how you feel. i'm sure you'll find a new kitty soon, please don't give up on the rspca coz i'm sure that rude biddy isn't be the only person working there, hopefully next time you go there to look at the kitties you'll get a polite friendly person! good luck xx
