Hi I was wondering is it alot cheaper to make your own cake or to get one made ??
I made sorta a trial cake yesterday ( well for my friends birthday) and the sencond layer burnt and the incing went all bubbly andf it was a disaster. after that I called up a couple of places and got quotes on getting a 1st birthday cake made in a shape of a 1 and most quotes were only like $32 some abit dearer and that for a 30 cm long cake which i thought was very cheap.
So i wonder does it cost about the same if I was to make one I mean I am thinking by the time I have to buy a cake board and all the ingredients and everything ??
I really did want to make it, but I dont want it to turn out bad..Lol

Hey Kelly!

My advice, if you wanna make your own cake for the day.. CHEAT :P Buy the sponge cake packs at the supermarket and then cut them up into the shapes you want for the cake :) Ice it the way you want etc... The icing wont go bubbly as the cakes are cold :)

This is what I made Wyatt:

I used one round cake and two square cakes :)

As the other ladies said, CHEAT!! I also got my local bakery to bake me a huge sponge slab $15 and then I cut it into the shape 1 and did the icing myself (just simple butter icing with some food coloring) and decorated with lollies. It meant that I wasn't stressed about the cake not rising/burning etc, it was baked perfectly and I could personalise it with my decorating....it went down a treat!!

I usually make birthday cakes a few weeks early (chocolate, vanilla or marbled) and put it in the freezer. This means no last minute panic if it burns etc and I ensure I've time for a second try incase I need it. And all I have to do the day before is take the cake out of the freezer and ice.
