Toilet training advice please!

DS is 21 months and I'm keen to look at toilet training late in the year (when it's warmer), so when he's 2.5.

Currently he tells me when he's done a poo 90% of the time and sometimes, if it's a gross one, he'll get quite anxious about it and want to be changed ASAP. He has no concept of being wet.

He watches when I go to the toilet and I tell him about poos and wees and toilet paper and flushing. He's in MCNs and after he's been changed we go and flush the poo down the toilet together (hows that for bonding :rolleyes:).

I am unsure of the pros and cons of getting him a potty or putting him on the toilet with a child seat. I have tried to put him on the toilet once and he completely freaked out.

While I can't stand her parenting philosophy, I have a Gina Ford "potty training in one week" book but I'm not sure whether to go with that sort of approach or even where to go from here in terms of following DSs lead.

It's not completely obvious or apparent when he's doing a poo (he doesn't necessarily go quiet and concentrate or anything like that) so it's hard to "catch him in the act" and it's impossible to know when he's doing a wee.

Any advice, tips or anecdotes would be appreciated.

We bought DS hug a lugs (which we had some of already) and a potty. We popped him on the toilet as soon as he woke up with a cold drink. Guaranteed to make them wee ;) Once he got use to the sensation of the toilet it really all followed. DS trained himself for poos way before wees, he was much like your DS with not liking them. We really let him lead the way beyond that. When he went we celebrated and when he didn't, it was all good too.

I would like some toilet training advice too! My ds took his own nappy off the other day waddled over to his dads shoes squatted over them and did a poo into one! We bought him a potty but he is only 13months old is this too young to start?
