Hi All,
I am due to have baby no. 2 on 26/11/05. We do not know the sex of the baby so have to have a name for either. I like the name HARPER - but I wondered if people would think it is more of a girls or boys name?
What do you think?
Thanks,
Rhiannon

Harper Lee wrote the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" and was female. However, to me it sounds like a unisex name - just do what makes you happy!
Hi Rhiannon!
It's so terribly hard choosing baby names, isn't it?
We still don't have one chosen & we have 25 days til I'm due & we KNOW it's a girl! This hasn't made it easier at all!
As for the name Harper. I've just taken a look in my baby names book (they're all quite current) & 3 out of 4 of them have it listed under "boys names", the 4th book was really small & didn't have it listed at all.
When I first saw it I also thought of it as a boys name. But in this day and age there are so many names now that are becoming uni-sex that I'm not sure if it really matters too much! (Although I still like girly names for girls!) Good luck with your choice!

Wow what a nice name!! I think you could use it as both boy or girl! When I first saw it I thought girl, not sure why?! But I think it is very versatile!! :D
Hi,
When I read the name "Harper" I thought of a boy.
Not sure why - but just sounds like a boy name to me!
Cheers

Thats a cute name. Although it does sound unisex, i think it'd suit a girl better :)

I think you could use it on either, but it sounds a bit more of a girls name. JMO

Like Nickster, I thought of Harper Lee and "To Kill a Mickingbird". But it's a name that could be used for a girl or a boy. It's a great name either way.
I thought of Harper as a boy's name when i first saw it - and it's a nice name too. I love name's that are uncommon.

One more vote for a boy here! although it could sound good for a girl too, it just sounded boy to me when I first read it :)
Harper is the best name! I loved it so much when I was pregnant with DD3 but when I said it with our last name I laughed myself silly for an hour...it sounded so stupid :D
I prefer it for a girl but it would be fine for either sex...
Hey if I can't have it someone else might as! :)

Thanks everyone for your input on the name HARPER.
It seems like it can be either a girl or boy. We will use it if we have a boy. I would also like to use it if we have a girl but I still need to convince my husband - he thinks it is too strong for a girl.
Thanks all,
Rhiannon
Only because friends of ours have a girl named Harper - she is the most lovely natured child I've ever met - probably a lot to do with her parents - I hope yours (and ours) is as polite and happy! Good luck!
I have a beautiful nephew named Harper.
It certainly looks like you could use it for either a boy or a girl.
good luck!

I think its unisex - but I did think of a boy first.

when i think of Harper i think of a surname!! sorry but its just my opinion! i ask my man and he said a girls name... just depends on the person i guess.. good luck!
I also first thought it was a surname, and then I thought it was more masculine than feminine, but each to his/her own! :)
Hi,
I'm due 14th Feb, 2006 and we're having our first baby girl after two beautiful sons! Harper-Lane is the name we have chosen. I like unisex names and my favourite novel of all time is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, however I believe Harper is her middle name and Nelle is her first name. Either way I think it's great!
I know my mother in-law is going to hate it, her name is Elizabeth Mary Louise  (a mouth full isn't it) and she only suggest names like Rose, Daisy or Ivy :o.
I really love the name Harper. My boys names are Frazer and Clayton. Good luck to everyone with the name game.

Just thought I would add my two cents....
Harper is a nice name that can be used for both a boy or a girl. It isn't easily shortened if you don't like that happening (Hunter is another that comes to mind & also unisex) too.
Also, a newsreader from Brisbane, Jillian Whiting, called her baby girl Harper (I think she got it from the Mockingbird book too) just this year.
Good luck with your choice and with your new bub boy or girl!! :D
I know both a little boy and a girl with this name, and I prefer it on a girl! :p

I once thought the name was suited to a boy but I have a friend who called her daughter Harper, a gorgeous girl, the name suits her.

Ive just been searching thru names as we have just had our 3rd child.
We named her Harper, and our 2 boys are Oliver and Elliot. I registered on this board just to respond to your post.
Great names both of them !
I think Harper is a boy's name

I tend to lean towards it being more a boy's name, but i also can see it as a unisex name.
It's my DS's middle name!
I think due to the fact that this thread is well over 3 years old, I'm sure the OP has decided the name of their baby by now. I'll close this thread ;)
