View Full Version : Does Anyone Know the Going Rate?

I trotted off down to the pre-school this afternoon to collect Miss Sop. The teacher approached me (this is usually a terrifying experience in itself) and told me that Sop had lost a tooth.
I looked in my DD's mouth and noticed that she now sports a rather cute looking gap in her smile. Well, I got a bit teary, I have also gotten teary on the first day, when she was 'person of the day' and whenever they tell me what a good girl she is. I am a real big sook when it comes to my kids.
Anyway, they put the little tooth in a fairy envelope for the tooth fairy. Does anyone know the going rate of the tooth fairy for her first tooth?
I am teary now, just seems like yesterday that I was leaving her in the hospital while she grew big enough to come home.:crying:

Well, I used to get 50c - $1 per tooth, but that was back in the seventies when that could buy you a lot of mixed lollies!
Hugs to you and your gappy gal!

I used to get $1 from the tooth fairy at MY house and then I would transport the tooth to my Grans' house and would get $2 from the tooth fairy who went to HER house.:D
:) we pay $2 dollars per tooth at the moment- hope prices donīt get up too soon LOL
ohh first tooth is a special tooth so the price is a bit higher I'd give her $5 then other teeth are cheaper $2 I remember my tooth fairy gave me extra money for my first and then my two front teeth and by two bottom teeth as that meant I was growing up....apparently :D
Congratulations to Miss Sop on this lovely milestone.
Just remember to hide the tooth well! I remember finding some in my mother's jewellery box and was very confused as to why the Tooth Fairy had left them behind. ;)
Going rate in our house is 2 bucks a tooth :D
If I'd had a daughter I wanted to get one of these for her.

I'm not sure of the going rate these days but...
My cousin teaches Prep and the children were once comparing how much the tooth fairy brings each of them
One little girl said she received $20.00 per tooth!
A couple of weeks later my cousin came across a little huddle at the back of the room...some of the children were giving this particular girl their teeth because 'her tooth fairy's better than mine!'...oh bless 'em!
I agree with Pixie, I would give my boys probably a $5 for the first one. Make a big deal of it (although could backfire with expecting that much each time...lol) and then a lesser amount for the rest. We used to get about $2 per tooth if we were lucky!

My god - I must have gotten ripped off. I was lucky to get 20c (in the eighties). My tooth fairy must have been poor!

Our tooth fairy takes a slightly different approach. She does leave a few coins but she also leaves a small collection of gemstones. All sparkly and fairy like. The children now believe (their own idea!) that the fairy turns teeth into treasure! DS is the only one to have lost any and he has a special little trinket bag to keep his booty in. :)

That's such a lovely (non-commercial!!) idea, Sal!
The going rate when I was growing up was the highest coin denomination at the time - and I think I'll stick to that with miss C when the time comes....so $2 in our house :)

50c? I thought you would have got a nice shiny sixpence or penny in your day :p

Miss K, should a moderator be admitting to such deception. How can we ever trust you again?

No not going to pay $20. I am pretty sure she hasn't worked out the value of money just yet. 10 cents still seems like a lot to her. Hope it lasts.

I think that is a lovely idea. How do you come up with all these good ideas? Wish I thought of that earlier.
Kazza, I love those bracelets, thank you. She loves a bit of bling. I am going to hide it behind her bed and pretend that it has fallen behind there.
I got up extra early to put some coins under the pillow. I found $1 under her pillow and the tooth gone, for a minute I thought the tooth fairy really must be true, then I realised it was DH.
Thanks for all the replies. She ended up with $2.20 - was what I had in my purse.

So teeth attract GST!

The tooth fairy leaves $2 here.....then the teeth get turned into new stars in the night sky.
It was 20 cents back in the mid 80's/early 90's when I was a kid.....I was getting ripped off!!!
