What's it like for families? Which are the 'nice' areas?
TIA

Hi there I'm from Bendigo. I have moved around to different suburbs, mostly as a single teen-20's so i cant help much with the family side of things. Everywhere has a reputation in some way. But i think some reputations are biased. Not many people like Eaglehawk for example, but many who have lived there find it quite lovely. It has a supermarket, take away shops (fish & chips etc) Bakerys, butchers, chemist, newsagent etc.
Long Gully definitely has a bad reputation but i lived in the area and found i had no problem, it depends on what part of Long Gully you choose to live. Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square are good, again depending on which particular part you live. Strathdale is sort of considered a bit upper class, but again its based on what part you live in.
If you are thinking of a particular place, feel free to PM me with a street address and suburb and i can give you my personal opinion if i know much about the particular area. Just remember it is just my opinion and some people probably have a different view.

Hi Hayles,

I'm Bendigo Born and Bred and whilst I live about 80kms out of town now, I'm in there at least twice a week.

As with most places, there are good and bad spots to any suburb. Most suburbs have great access to everything, shopping, schools, public transport.
Bendigo is not THAT small, but it's not anything like Melb either. You can live in the outer suburbs (around 20kms from CBD) and it will only be a 15 min drive to the CBD.

More than happy to elaborate if you want. Feel free to PM me any time. :) Good luck with the move if it happens (and don't freak about being 'country' - it's really not. Trust me, I lived in a town with one house! Now THAT's country! You're also pretty darn close to melb still and the trip down the Calder doesn't take long at all. :))
