Hi, my son is 3.5 months old, he is on formula...last week I started giving him 200 mls every feed and he was happy with that, I am also giving him a couple of teaspoons of veg puree with his 6pm feed. But the last couple of days he has been playing with his bottle after I burp him half way through the bottle... he screams when I first take it out because he wants to keep feeding- then he doesnt want it back after burping! It doesnt make sense to me and I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem, or advice? Do I still need to burp him half way through his feeds? I have been throwing away so much formula. Sometimes he will take the whole 200mls. Just when you start to get everything working, something else happens that you have to sort out

Motherhood

I too was told to burp my baby part way through feeds, but TBH I find it not only disrupted my baby, but was entirely unneccesary. When BF, it often helps to burp the baby when changing sides (I mean, it's easier, as the baby lets go once one side is emptied anyway) and I figured that it's a moot point when bottle-feeding.

My only advice would be to just go with the flow of your bub. Let him show you what he wants.

In the end we stopped trying to burp DD all together anyway. If she needed it to come up, it would do so of its own accord without our help.

thanks MrsMiggins, I dont like stopping him, he gets real upset having the bottle taken away, but on the other hand you feel you should burp them because people tell you to do so. I might try feeding him without burping half way next feed if he looks happy enough... thanks again

No problem! :)

Just a suggestion anyway. I mean, I'm certainly no expert, but I did find I had much more luck letting my DD guide me as to what she needed, rather than listening so much to what I "should" be doing with her!

I've always burped my bubs when they stop drinking. Sometimes they finish the bottle then I burp them, other times they might stop once or even twice to burp before finishing. For the first few mths I had to stop DS half way thru his bottle coz he had reflux and if I didn't burp him half way thru things got very messy.

Bub will let you know if he needs to burp :)

My DD goes up and down with the amount that she drinks and always has. I think that it has a lot to do with their growth cycles. At the moment she is drinking all of her bottles, last week some she not drank half of. She wasn't drinking 200 mls willingly until around 5-6 months. I have learnt that she will take what she wants, and as my GP said a baby will not starve themselves. I go through stages where a lot of formula goes down the sink too. The only time I was really worried was when DD was sick. Whether or not you need to burp your bub half way through the feed depends entirely on whether they have wind problems or not. I think around 3-4 months from memory I was less concerned about the burping and would often wait until the end of the feed, although my daughter fortunately has never had any wind problems and is always capable of producing the most amazing coke burps!!! (makes her dad proud):ecomcity:

Well, I have just fed him without burping half way- and it went well- he had the whole lot :smiliedance: He just spilled a little more than usual, but he still had more of his bottle overall than he does when I do stop to burp...

Thanks for all your replies, once again, you bubhub ladies  have helped me move forward in this journey of being a mummy :yelclap:

Glad it all went well!

Bubhub is always great I reckon, because even if you get a million different responses, you can usually find something worth trying! There's always mums who've been through the same thing & are willing to offer advice.

Hope it all continues to go along smoothly for you!

Our bubs are only 2 days apart in age. In the last couple of weeks my DD has been drinking less. I don't think they need as much after 3 months. She went from about 200ml per feed to somewhere betwen 160-180.

Like your bub, after I stopped her half way she was refusing to go back on. So I just stopped taking her off. She now comes off herself after about 120ml, I burp her and then she will usually have the rest (but if she doesn't, I don't force her). I don't have any problems with not stopping to burp her. She can tell when she needs to burp and will come off herself!

Wow, sounds just like Cooper- he's been having less most feeds too! Its good to hear your bubs is doing the same, seen as they are so close in age it must just be how they are at this stage! I have now been letting him feed without burping and he has been fine, and much happier too  He hated me stopping him- he loves his food hehe!
Also, alanasmum, can i ask what your daughter weighs and her length, just for curiosity as my bub was premature- it would be interesting to see how he compares with another bub close in age :)

Hi there

DD was little when born at 38 weeks - she weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces (2.7kg) and was 47cm long. She has thrived on formula and is a chubby little bubba now! At her 3 month check she weighed 5.6kg and was 58.5cm long. She's significantly heavier now - I'll be very interested to see what she weighs at her 4 month check next week. But every bub is different, so if your bub weighs less or more, it's nothing to be concerned about. Looks like he has a healthy appetite!
