Samuel was due on 7 October. The day before, I had my 40 week checkup with my GP. I was sure I would end up being induced 10 days over. I was starting to freak about DH using all his leave before Sam turned up, so that afternoon I bought some castor oil. I took 10ml with coke at 4, 5, then 8-ish that night and went to bed around midnight with no diarrhoa or any change apart from nausea. :barf:

Around 3 am I woke up with a niggling pain. I tried to ignore it but then felt a 'pop' and starting timing the pains, realising they were already 5 minutes apart. I dismissed the 'pop' sound being my waters because nothing came out while I was laying there. I soon decided I needed to pee (again - just for something different) and out it all came. Still half asleep, I called the hospital before grabbing a Frosty Fruit, having a cup of tea and waking DH (as you do)! We arrived at the hospital around 4:30 am and were placed into an assessment room. I sent DH out for McDonalds for breaky and I am glad I did given what eventuated! Nothing had changed by 10 am, so the midwives wanted to send me to the ward. My midwife, Ros, told them not to and by 11 am I was in a birthing room. Ros checked and found I was 4cm dilated. Very suddenly, I started having intense contractions and within 20 minutes I was groaning and grunting and trying to tell them I needed to push. Ros told me I was being silly and tried to sit me up. It was excruciating as I was fighting my body's impulses. At this stage, I very politely asked for an epidural - still don't know how I managed that! I never got it though. The trace monitor showed bub was having a little trouble and the 'head' midwife suggested I have an epidural for his benefit about half an hour beforehand (Turns out that monitor was buggered and they went and got another one). In the meantime, I started on the gas as I was against pethidine. Lucky, as Sam would have been dopey from it.

I was still trying to tell DH, Ros and my MIL that something was up, saying "push, push" but Ros ignored me and they thought I was just not coping. The head widwife wised up and checked me again to find I had gone to 10cm within those 20 minutes. Hearing that was very good for my state of mind as I'd thought I had hours left and was just being a wuss! Turns out I was in transition and should have been pushing 20 minutes ago.

I started pushing (my body pretty much did all the work for me) and refused the gas as it made me feel ill. After 1 1/2 hours Sam was born, with his little cord wrapped around his neck twice. Everyone panicked but he screamed straight away and was fine in an instant, AGPARS 8 & 9. I had a fair tear up one side instead of up the back end, thank god, which they tried to stop but Sammy just about flew out! So, all up from the first pain to the end was 11 hours but only 3 of active labour.

I was the talk of the hospital, Sam weighed 3.92 kilos and was 50cm long. Ros said that next time I'd have to go to the hospital as soon as I had my first contraction adn they would set up a net to catch bub in. Another midwife told me Sam was the quietest baby they'd ever had over night. Ros must have got the guilts as I was given my own room. I only stayed 24 hours as Sam feeds like a little piglet and is very easy to read.

I'm very happy to be home and very grateful Sam is so easy to cope with. I used to read these posts all the time, my best of advice is to go with your instincts. If you think you need to push, ask them to check. I took their word for it and they were way off.

Great story! I was also in labour for only 3.5 hours and my first internal I was 10cms and the baby was coming. I don't think anyone believed me saying that I felt like he was coming out, so yes.
