View Full Version : Due in six weeks
ok - let me summarise....
DH and I LOOOOVVVEE basic names (you know.. michael, kate, nicholas, benjamin etc) but we have ALWAYS loved the boys name 'Jack' ..
its sad (as in pathetic!!) - but we had our names picked out well and trully before pregnancy!!
ever since we have been pregnant.. we have called the bump either pumpkin or Jack - basically deciding that it is a boy (we dont actually know) ..
my delemia is that the name Jack seems to be becoming so common now... it is apparently the top boys name at the moment (which SUCKS.. no fair people!!!!)_ I just dont want my son to be in a class at school with 5 other boys named Jack..
I guess what I am asking is - a) is it really that common? b) am I being a paranoid freak? ??? c) should I just 'stick to my guns' and ignore the fact that there are more Jacks around??

Yes, it's seems to be coming common... however if you LOOOVVEE ( :p ) it, go with it.
I feel the same about the name we've picked for a girl. Loved it from when we 1st got hitched, now it's really popular - Ella. I've decided to still go with it coz I love it more than any other name.
Good luck

I would say to stick with Jack! If you really love it, then it will fit your bub and every time you call him, you will be calling him by a name that shows how much you love him!
I have a Daniel ... now, every second kid over he past hundreds of years has been named Daniel! When we rang my dh's grandmother to let her know that we had a boy and had named him Daniel, she was really rude and told us to change his name as he was the 6th Daniel in the extended family! Of course, we refused, as it was the name we really liked and we didn't even see the other Daniels at all, so what was the problem?
When we named our daughter Bella, it wasn't incredibly popular, but now she is at pre-school with another Bella and there are so many versions of this name that are popualr now, that are routinely shortened to Bella, so she won't be alone!
I grew up with an unusual name, hated having to spell it to everyone, hated having it mispronounced, hated that people assumed that you had told them a similar name and insisted on calling me that ... basically hated my name until I was 25 and decided that I wasn't going to let it bother me anymore! I still get called Kylie, Carla, Cara, Kyla, Karen, Kirsty, Keira, Tyler ... etc, but am not bothered by it now and just gently correct the person.
We named our daughter Bella because we wanted to be telling her that she was beautiful every time we called her ... her nickname (and I thought they were supposed to be shorter, but oh well!) is Bella Bella Princess ... I would have liked that as a kid!
Oh, funny thing .... just to make you smile ...
When I pick Bella up from pre-school it is Kyra picking up Bella - there is another Mum, Kyla who picks up her daughter, Ella!
I just think that's a funny co-incidence!
I've got a Jack and cant imagine him as anyone else! We did think about whether it was too common but thought who cares we both LOVE it!
Your Jack will always be yor individual little (then big) boy :)
I LOVE the name Jack - I have loved it since I was little!
I had a similar situation when I was pregnant as I wanted to call DD Emily but read it was the most popular name pretty much all around the world in English speaking countries!
Long story short, bubba is indeed called Emily and although I have met a couple of other bubs of the same age with the same name, I haven't regretted it for a minute. She is an individual to me!
Good luck and go with whatever you want - don't worry about everyone else :)
thanks guys :)
I think we will stay with Jack (assuming its a boy :P)
now we just have to nail down a middle name!!!!!! :D

Jack is a great boys name its cute for a little fella and strong for a big man. As long as you wernt going to lumber him with daniel as a middle name. Ive seen that done before lol
LOL - no we definately WEREN'T going with Jack Daniel... we dont want to link him to the alcohol- although DH said the other night that if we knew for sure that it was a boy- he would love me to wear one of their advertising shirts- you know the ones that say ' Jack Lives Here' :D
the other middle name we have definately ruled out is Robert... Jack Robert is too close to Jack Rabbit for me :)

I also love the name Jack and wouldn't worry if it is common. My two girls both have very common names, but, as I have said in another thread, it doesn't worry us that other people also have very good taste in names and call their children the same name - our girls are very much little individuals who know who they are.
And don't worry about the class full of Jacks - at primary school there were 5 Michaels in my class and no one every got them confused. At Uni I had two friends called Tim who shared a house and everyone always knew which one was being referred to when someone yelled out "Tim"!
I love the idea of a shirt saying "Jack lives here"!!!!
oh Veve you HAVE to get a "Jack lives here" tee !! Thats just too fantastic...
I am glad it seems you will stick with Jack as i think its a great name..
Our second boy due Nov will be Ethan and we are getting the "its very popular now" comments.... LIKE I CARE !!?? I was born just weeks before Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin that fateful Christmas and can i say i certainly knew a lot of Tracey's !! Never bothered me one bit !!!
Here's to little Jack *ching ching* :)

Hi there,
I just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE the name Jack. When we found out we were pregnant with Twins, Jack was the first name to be decided upon. It's a name that suits a young boy all the way through to a grandfather :)
We saw that it was quite a popular name but still that wouldn't have swayed us from calling our son that. It's just such a strong, manly name.
We have since found out that our twins are both girls, so we no longer have that naming issue, but one of our girls will be named Grace which is on the most popular list, but there is no way that I would let go of the name - it just means that alot of people have excellent taste in naming their children!!
If you love the name, keep it!! :)
