The price of garden pots is ridiculous!! I am keeping a look out in the classifieds for second hand ones.

Does anyone have any ideas about other household items I could use as garden pots? (without looking awful)

I was also thinking about using those Ikea storage tubs and drilling holes in the bottom??

Any ideas?

Crazy isn't it!!

I check eBay quite regularly for pots.

I have a few smaller succulants in cans (my can opener leaves a smooth to the touch rim on the top)..they go all rusty and it looks pretty cool.

and am planning to make some planter boxes - keep an eye out for old fence palings or pallets, make a frame, line and plant.

(I have made a vertical garden out of an old pallet )

I've also gone to teh reject shop and bought some $2 plastic pots.. in ugly plastic colours and then painted them in the colorbond colour spray paint that suits our house (primed first).

I agree on the eBay comment - can sometimes pick up a bargain there. I recently bought some of those big, flexible plastic tubs from Bunnings for around $8, and just drilled holes in them.

I also recently saw a 'recipe' for a faux stone pot with cement, sand and peat/coir, all mixed up to a mud consistency with water, then just moulded over a pile of wet sand or polystyrene box. I might give that a go.

eBay and Gumtree are a good way to go....keep a look out for people getting rid of theirs.

Pots are terribly expensive to buy new, it's ridiculous! I save all my littler ones to re plant cuttings and such in, but i don't really have any other ideas, sorry....i'd love some cheaper ones too!

i buy cheap black plastpots and spraypaint them, usually just silver so they reflect the heat. i also stack up 2 old tyres and paint them. atm i have raspberries in one and waiting on more potting mix so i can plant blueberries in the other.
i saw on BH&G one night that most pot places have a spot out the back somewhere where they have cheap pots that might be chipped or something.
