View Full Version : Splinter removal with a toddler??
DD,almost 20 months, has a small splinter in her finger after falling against a wooden bookcase...whats the best way to get it out?
It's not worrying her, doesn't appear to be sore, but I want to get it out incase it gets infected.
How do I do this? Drawing ointment? Or should I go to the doctors, and get them to extract it?

Seriously if it isnt bothering her i would leave it obviously keep an eye on it & keep it clean etc.
The body with naturally expell it in time so probably a few weeks when its ready !

I agree with that, the body does get rid of it in time... although, as well as keeping an eye for infection, it might also be noted that if part of the splinter isn't sticking out of the skin, sometimes the skin will heal over it.
I've heard sticky tape is quite affective as well if you want to get rid of it - but only works if some of it can be stuck to the tape.
Wish I could be helpful, but I loved splinters and getting the tweezers out to dig at them lol sick sick puppy :p

The human body is an amazing thing, and if the splinter is not too deep, then perhaps it will push it out. Me, I'd probably check with my GP or local chemist on what they thought the right thing to do would be. Perhaps there is some sort of numbing cream or spray you could use to make the splinter removal less traumatic.

DS had a splinter in his foot a couple of weeks ago.
DH was all gunho about it and tried to get it out while ds slept.......he basically just got the tip out and the result was an infected foot!
So after three trips to the gp and a course of antibiotics the splinter finally came out.
I would leave it, and check with you GP and if your hubby is anything like mine DONT let him anywhere near your dd's finger LOL:rolleyes:

Not to alarm you but my brother (as a toddler) had a splinter that actually travelled into his system and left him hospitalised with infection. If possible, I would remove it or get your GP to do it.

You could try putting a bandaid on it for a couple of hours, which will draw it closer to the surface, then distracting her and trying to get it out.
If you don't feel confident doing so, I would take her to the GP.
But I agree with FC - don't just leave it!

If you put magnoplasm on it and then a band-aid it should draw it out. It's meant to work in 12-24 hours. If it doesn't work it's deep and I would double check with my GP.
Thanks everyone for your help!
I ended up getting it out myself,it was only just beneath the skin with a tiny bit sticking out that I hadn't noticed last night, and it came out with no dramas.Phew
I put some antiseptic cream on too,and will for a few days.I'll keep an eye on it to make sure all is ok.:)
