I plan to use modern fitted nappies but I think the ones I've seen so far will really be too big and bulky (even when folded down) to use in those first few weeks. I have a couple of Baby Beehinds and a couple of Green Kids to try out but I don't want to buy lots until bub has arrived and I've had a chance to work out what works well for me.
So I've recently found muslin flat cloth nappies (I was very excited as I'd been looking for a while and finally found them at target of all places), which I have bought to use on bub when he/she is just newborn. I don't mind folding them (I'm still an expert fron when my little siblings were in nappies) and hopefully they won't be too bulky and will be nice and cool for my summer baby. They wont be super absorbant but I can always add an extra layer of something in the soaker if needed.
BUT they will need covers, so what do you suggest will be good for covering a folded flat muslin nappy on a little newborn. It would be good if the covers could still be used for a while over a fitted nappy later on.:detective:

A stretchy wool cover/soaker? That is what I am planning to use on my next baby as newborn.

I read on a website recently that wool wraps were more suited to older children than babies as wool isn't water proof and by having a baby just lay all day it can cause leaks;) Or it was something like that!
I don't know how true that is but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I used BabyBeehinds pul covers right from the start. They cross over a bit a the front and stay nice and snug.

The main thing that would put me off using wool in the first couple or three months is the blowout poos. One of the beauties of wool is the low-care with wee-only: airing out between uses and hand-washing once in several weeks. But they do need hand-washing, and take ages to dry.
A PUL or fleece wrap is great for newborns in my opinion - a wrap so you don't have to pull the cover down the legs after a blowout, and PUL or fleece for easy washing and rapid drying. We used Bummis four years ago, but there are plenty more options around now including Australian-made.

Fleece wraps probably be best then. Easy to wash. use and fit.

The Modern Baby ones are really good. They have a gusetty type bit between the legs and fit very well. The only thing is though that I have had some leaks through the PUL.

Thanks for all your thoughts everyone, yes I think PUL is probably the way to go and at least the wrap style covers are a bit adjustable so will hopefully give a snug fit even on a teeny tiny newborn botty. I'll have a look around.

Mother-ease and Bummis have some great covers which come in newborn sizes, so are ideal to put over a muslin flat. Another awesome wrap is the Tots Bots fleece wraps. They evaporate the moisture perfectly and the evaporation actually keeps them cool in summer. Plus being fleece, they are super soft on the delicate new skin. When they are newborn, you can just pop a booser in the fleece wrap and not worry about the muslin flat at all.
