how do you tell if your child is delayed? my ds is 18 months in a few weeks and he shows no signs of talking but i dont know if this is from his hearing problems or not.physically he is running walking climbing etc.
i just dont know if i should worry about the lack of speech. the way he now communicates is crying and screaming and lashing out and pointing :(
and i dont know what he wants all the time.

Jess, my DS isn't talking either (he just babbles) but both my gp and ECHN have both told me not to worry as most boys do not start talking until they are two. My gp has 3yr old twins and one of them just started over night about 6 months ago.

i am not sure as every child is different but my son is 18 months old and say mum, dad, bath, bottle, narna (banana), nan, pop, whats that and points, juice, NO,

Thats all i can think of but they not said like an adult obviously but he does talk... but i all kids are different....

When i say babble he will just go diddlediddle (basically we can make no sense of it at all!!!) and says mumma and dad but not us if that makes sense - he just throws them in with his babble.

Like belinda said every baby is different.....

They will ask about this at the appt & if your concerned really press them.
It could be hearing related does he hear you calling him ? Loud noises ? Look in the direction of noise ? If he does all of these them im sure all is fine but again if your unsure get them to refer you onto someone who can really check him out properly.
Im sure he is pretty normal & all is fine :hugs:
Boof used to say so many words it wasnt funny then a few months ago he stopped & everything has been either babble or "meow" !!! Gets very frustrating reading books to him when it ends in a fight about what he is pointing to which is say a train & he keeps saying "meow"
But just in the last few days he has started trying to use more words again like flower & tiger although this evening he managed to use the "F" word which nearly floored us but its just him using f more but its still a little scary !!!

 my little brother did the same thing as boof. shocked my mum so much lol

ds has a hearing test to review him in november pretty much he has had a test every 2 months to see how his hearingis going. if he shows signs of his hearing getting worse they will puthim on theurgent list to see the ENT specialist he is currently on the semi-urgent list and if he stays on that he wont be seen till july.

Ozzy has a habit of saying the 'f' word lately too, I figured out what he was actually trying to say and it was 'truck'! So I was happy about that:p

My best friends little sister couldnt say " Fat Controller " from Thomas instead it sounded like " F@#king Troller " the first time she said it to me my mouth dropped !!!!
Ahhh kids heheheh !

Jess - Have you got a blue book for your little guy ? Because you will find in the 18mth old area there are some questions that are for you to answer & then there are also some questions for your CHN or g.p to ask you to answer this is in regards to development. Funnily enough a lot of their reactions like tantrums are something they actually look for ! There is also a section on hearing ! Hope this helps :)

 yep i have a blue book.
hmmm looking at it now.
are the books all the same?
i think ds will pass the gross motor development stuff easily lol
i thinkthe vision and fine motor stuff is gunna be alright too. not sure what a palmar grasp is:confused: the book says
scribbles with palmar grasp

ok here is the stuff i am worried about.
in langauge speech and hearing part.

obeys simple instructions not quite he pretty much ignores what you are saying or gets cheeky and grins if he shows he heard you.

points to eyes nose and mouthi only see him point to his belly lol and objects he wants.

understands many morewordsnot really he is starting to learn his name though lol and he understands the word dad and mum but thats about it

gestures like wave bye bye points to indicate intresthe waves to koshie at the end of sunrise koshie is theonly person who gets regular waves lol but ds does point to stuff

social behaviour &play
he can use a spoon but not a cup
he is a master at taking shoes and socks off lol
he doesnt like to pretend play i have been told by dayare workers
he gets into everything
andhe loves cuddles :)

i dont know what to make of it all. when i read his blue book it looks like he is behind

jess, I went to a training inservice yesterday on speech and communication for young ones. we spoke about what is 'typical' in language development, and those who aren't considered 'typical' and others who have more complex delays.

I have a few ideas of ways you can develop your communication with your child if you're interested... I could probably scan some of the stuff we got as hand outs and also send you some compic type sheets you can use with your little man to communicate better.

By the way - pretend playing isn't a 'typical' development for a child of his age.. they are just beginnign to associate objects, let alone get too creative ;)

My son was 2 in June and still does not say anything. He babbles a lot, and also says things like mum and dad, but not to us, so i don't count them as 'words' iykwim. The only thing that he has said that i think is a word is 'bob' (as in bob the builder lol). He gets this coy little smile whenever he sees bob the builder, and he had the same smile the 2 or 3 times he has said bob.

Anyway, just after he turned 2, i took him to the CYH and we were referred on to have a hearing test, and developmental tests at the childrens hospital. We're still waiting for most of the tests.

I think most GP's, etc are reluctant to take any action before 2 years old, but if your little one is still not speaking by that time, i would make an appointment at your local CYH. I expressed my concerns to my GP, and was fobbed off, but the CYH were brilliant, and actually listened to my worries!

Lauz -that be a great help :) thanks

allyoo- DP says i am neurotic lol he thinks i worry about everything like its a big deal lol

uptheduff - at the moment i am getting fobbed off coz the first thing i am asked is how is ds's hearingand once i explain that i am told "oh its probably his hearing slowing him down"which the audioligist said was happening but no one else seems to accept that:banghead:

bekkyboo- we dont even know yet if ds will get grommets he has to wait to see the ENT dr in july next yr to see if he needs further treatment and then he will probably have to wait longer :(

Jess if you are worried take him to get his hearing checked etc or to speech pathologist I did both of these with my DS1 cause other kids were saying much more then him.
He was fine no hearing problems and just slow to develop speech.
He doesn't talk real well but he is saying more things every day. It's how they learn how to swear pretty quickly.
Ds is 28 mths and I still can't understand some things.

Maybe you could start siging to your little one! just a thought I sign to my 15month and she babbles but if she wants something she signs to me.. Just basic stuff at the moment but if she wants something she signs"more " and i follow her to find out what she wants then sign the correct one..
