Totally clueless girl here so I have a few questions:
1) what are 'follicles'? In the context of "A promising cycle is one that offers two follicles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ovarian_follicle) measuring more than 16 mm" ?
2) What meds do you have to take and what are they for?
that's it for now!

Hi you may have found an answer to your Q's by now but here goes, follicles are what your ovaries produce your follicle releases an egg each cycle so i guess the bigger the folicle produced the bigger or better the egg. The meds that produce bigger folicles are called FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) the med i used was Puregon but there are various, good luck with your journey.

Ive just seen this!
As lissyann said, follicles are pretty much the 'house' your eggs grow in :)
I used puregon from CD2-9 which is one of a few follicle stimulation hormones available. That makes your follies grow.
I used Pregnyl (HCG) as the trigger shot, that makes you ovulate when the follicles are at the right size. They check that with an ultrasound. My clinic says 16-18mm is ideal.

Thanks guys! :D
If you have ideal follies and regular ovulation etc do they just do a natural cycle?
what clinic are you going to/looking at
most have a full treatment description of their website, or all information should be given to you before you start anything
Thanks guys! :D

I wish I also had no so called fertility issues but had to take the drugs which I hated, the drugs are used to produce more eggs and stop you from ovulating before they are ready to inseminate

Fertility First at Hurstville.
I'm not TTC until Sept so I have a while to gather my info :) I'm sure it'll all get explained to me when I have my first appt there, I just want to know what's being said before it's said!
not your clinic but info here

Hi ya.
I use clomid CD2-6 then puregon CD7-18 trigger injection CD19 then IUI CD21. Ovulation usually occurs 24-36 hours after the trigger shot so I usually have it 9pm on day 19 then IUI is 8am day 21.
My FS likes my follies to be between 18-21mm but some will let you trigger at 16mm.
I usually get 2 good follies and about 4-5 smaller ones that go away at trigger injection because they aren't big enough
:)
I think I read in another thread that you are a same sex couple? So in this instance you may have a natural IUI cycle, no drugs just monitoring so your FS has the correct timing for the IUI. He may want I do a few natural cycles before turning to drugs. Drugs are mainly used for women who don't or in my case can't ovulate on their own.
Bring on September hey!!

Yep, same sex couple...
I thought I read somewhere on my clinic's site that they try natural cycles first where possible but I can't find it now. I guess I'll know when I go in!
Thank you all for your help :goodvibes:
Bring on September indeed! We can be cycle buddies, siege!
For sure!! :)
I am hoping to start IUI again then, maybe give it 3 cycles then start looking at IVF
Until then I am on my own!

Depends on you and your FS/clinic really! My periods and ovulation are absolutely spot on, and my ovaries are great, but we decided to go with the medicated cycle after our FS told us it increases the chances slightly. So we decided to go in with all guns blazing and here we are :)

Yea hubby is moving away for work so no FS until September when the house sells and we are living together again. Haven't made a baby on our own in 4 years so my hopes aren't high but ya never know!!

If you do a natural cycle they'd to an internal ultrasound around day 9-11 and blood test I would assume every few days to check.
OT I thought you were going through Ivf Australia?

IVF Australia only looks after heterosexual couples, I've found out!

A bigot of some description, definitely!

"Christian" is such a broad umbrella. I know a lot of Christians who'd be completely supportive of me and DP starting a family, and a lot of non religious people who wouldn't be.
Although I don't think Catholics do generally support IVF, but I don't want to tarnish all Christians with the same brush because it's usually the fundamentalists of any religion that have such strong oppositions.
Whoever made that call for IVF Australia though - definitely a bigot. No single women allowed either.

Im sorry to crash, but I have been researching sperm donation and came across this:
"Fertility units are required by law not to discriminate on the grounds of marital or sexual preference who they treat. Fertility treatments are available to single women and single sex couples as well as heterosexual couples."
And THIS is on the IvF Australia website: At IVFAustralia we offer treatment with donor sperm to heterosexual couples, single women and couples in a same sex relationship.
Wtf. Clearly they don't?!!! :-( I wonder what the law actually states. Big hugs to you all xx

ODD!!!
Because my GP apologised to me for suggesting IVF Aus after discovering it didn't. Another same-sex couple I know got refused on the same basis.
Even if they do though, I think based on the latter, I'm sticking with the clinic I know is very gay friendly :)

Of course, why would you go somewhere that treats people like crap? :-(
I feel for you going trough this, I would have thought atleast in this day & age you'd be able to skip the discrimination especially from
Services like that! A holes!!

Thank you hun :goodvibes:
I love having BH to throw my questions at though. so invaluable :D
Sorry to crash - I go to ff at hurstville but use ICSI. If you have any questions about treatments or staff etc let me know and I will try and help. It's very gay friendly - I think a big part of that is that it's one of the only places that has no waiting list for donor sperm. They are also really friendly and answer all your questions with a sense of humour. Just be prepared that it is sometimes a long wait with appts as they often double and triple book scans.
BTW rainbow road - luv your signature! a truer statement has never been said.
Sent from my iPad so pardon the errors!

I thought they weren't allowed to discriminate!? I know some FS do based on weight, but thats the only type I've come across.
As for the Christian thing..yeah pretty much most of them are against it, but there are several smaller Churches that are fine with it.
I'm Catholic..Roman Catholic, like the hardcore one ..let someone say something to me :laughing: I love my faith to a degree..but some parts I refuse to accept.
Hey girls!
Im right in the middle of using Hurstville atm also rainbow road, doing the exact same thing as you & DP are planning! So while Im not an expert yet, I'm getting there LOL as Rae81 said any questions ask away! :babydust1:

I went through FF at hurstville. After 8 rounds of clomid with my gynecologist we were referred to Anne Clark. I have PCOS but can happily say that we fell pregnant on our 3rd cycle of IUI, and now have a bouncing 6 month old baby boy. The ladies at FF at Hurstville are fantastic, can't recommend then enough.
A bigot of some description, definitely!
Hi rainbow road , I will reply to this bit then read through to the end and reply more about our experience.
The reason most clinics in NSW will only offer their services to heterosexual couples is a lack of sperm donors. Legislation changed in 2010 which means that donors must agree to a child finding out the donor's real name and last known address when the child turns 18. Most clinics have struggled to get donors and hence shut down their donor program. But I agree it sucks big time. Stay tuned while I read the rest of the thread...
I am part of a same sex couple. In our experience a lot of NSW clinics do not offer the use of donor sperm so this automatically excludes single women and same sex couples.
Fertility First actually use donor sperm from the US. Donors in Australia are few and far between. In Australia it is against the law to sell or buy human tissue. Unfortunately under Australian law, sperm is considered human tissue. Secondly, as NSW legislation requires identity disclosure at a future date, most men are scared off. By using US sperm , where clinics pay for it, they actually have a higher grade donors need to meet to donate so it ends up being a better quality sample too.
We are using Fertility First at Hurstville and could not be happier with them or speak higher of them. We have had 3 rounds of IUDI using donor sperm from America. Unfortunately my DP has had 2 miscarriages along the way. So we have moved onto IVF using ICSI.
Dr Anne does a whole lot of blood tests on both partners, just in case something turns up in one that may mean they can't carry a child. Then dr Anne will send you for scans of the ovaries, tubes and uterus. Once all this comes back she sits down with you both and discusses what your best options are. Based on my DP's results we went for natural cycles, but with support hormones after IUDI.
We have found everyone there to be really friendly, from the staff at the reception desk, to the nurses, even dr Anne is wonderful. Nothing is ever a stupid question for them, nothing is too trivial to ask. When you are with a staff member it feels like you are the only one they care about, even though the waiting room is overflowing! They always give you the time to ask anything you need or discuss anything you are unsure of.
We have found them to be really supportive of us as a couple. In fact I phone up and they straight away know who my DP is and what stage we are up to etc. I'm sure they just pull me up on the computer and it tells them everything but it feels Like they know exactly who I am.
Any questions feel free to pm me. There is also a thread for the tww for IUI. Feel free To drop in and say hi there.
I know it's a late reply but hopefully helps.. If you have a good natural ovulation the Anne will look to do a natural cycle... Just waiting to do my hycosy to find out whether that will be the road for us or not.
Also, re ivf Australia, only just spoken to them this week. They def offer services to same sex couples and also now use an importation service with American donors. The woman I spoke to was lovely and no negative responses to being a same sex couple from their main office or regional clinic.
Good luck :-)
