From reading some threads it seems like all you funky mummies are getting excited about cloth nappies and how cute they look etc.....
I'm thinking of jumping the bandwagon but I've been ignorant in all things cloth coz in the old days my mum had to soak the pooey nappies and fold them in a certain way and use all those safety pin things.... and I could never figure out the correct way of triangle folding onto a baby's butt etc... but I digress.....
Anyway..... I know nothing about this new modern cloth nappies so please fill me in, where do you get them, how much do they cost, how much do you need, are there special ones for boys and girls or are they unisex, is there such a thing as a sample? :p (or maybe that's just for the disposable ones?) What do they look like? If you have them sitting in a dry pail when they are dirty don't they smell!?!

Check out the following sites:
http://www.allaboutnappies.com/understanding.php
and
http://www.modernnappies.org/
and
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ozclothnappies/
the ozclothnappies yahoo group is great, but I think the www.ozclothnappies.org website is the best place to start. It's got LOADS of FAQs, as well as links to free patterns for making your own nappies and covers, and business lists, then the link to the yahoo group if you decide you want to chat to other cloth users and get advice.
where do you get them,
If you are planning to go the the parents babies and childrens expo, there will be some cloth stalls there where you can meet makers, ask questions and buy nappies. Also, some businesses have demonstrators, and some demonstrators do market stalls around melbourne.
Not many stores stock modern cloth, but if you are ok with buying on the internet there is loads of choice!
how much do they cost,
On average, modern cloth nappies are about $25 each, some more, some less.
how much do you need,
regardless of what type of nappy you use, traditional flat squares or fitted nappies, 24 is a good number to work with for washing every 2 -3 days, plus some covers.
are there special ones for boys and girls or are they unisex,
typically they are unisex, as you can fold the boosting inside the nappy to suit a boy or girl.
is there such a thing as a sample?
nup, they are expensive to make! But, you can get trial packs from most nappy retailers.
What do they look like?
They vary considerably. They are shaped like a single use throw away nappy, but softer, and generally come in a variety of colours, patterns, fabrics, and even shapes, from slim to bulkier for night time.
If you have them sitting in a dry pail when they are dirty don't they smell!?!
I tend to get the poo off before I leave it in a bucket for 2 days, but once I do that, I don't get smells
good luck
Tip: Don't be tempted to buy el cheapo ones off ebay. They will put you off.
