When do you get/give an eternity ring? Is there a certain anniversary or event that it goes with?

I dont think it matters anymore as many people I know got them as a 3 set with their wedding and engagement and have always worn them together.
But I was under the impression that it was a 10 year thing. However I just googled it and a couple of places say there is no set time but anniversaries and births are a good time. Their examples were 1st anniversary or the birth of the 1st child.
I was also told that its just a made up tradition by jewelers to get more money so...
In Japan they dont traditionally exchange rings (although as they love to copy western culture there is a lot of it going on now) I didnt get an engagment ring...had to kinda manipulate for a wedding band so I doubt I'll ever see an eternity ring:crying:

I think 'traditionally' you got an eternity ring on your 10th wedding anniversary, or on the occasion of your first born son - whichever comes first.
There don't seem to be any hard and fast rules. My mother received hers for her 20th wedding anniversary. I was given mine last year on mother's day after 4 1/2 years of marriage and two children - my husband refers to it as a "maternity" ring.

hhmmm......I have 3.5 kids and I will have been married for 10yrs next month. Still waiting for mine. :detective:
My understanding is first year or first child.... At the time I told DH that we weren't having children so it had to the first year.....
I don't think it matters when you get one. I received an eternity ring as a joint first wedding anniversary and first baby gift.
I got mine as our 1st wedding anniversary/ birth of our son which just happened to be 2 days apart :D

hhhmmmm.......might have to beg for one. DH doesn't know much about this sort of stuff....his parents aren't big on traditions etc. They don't even celebrate their wedding anniversary.

DH has always said that I would get mine for our 10 year Wedding Anniversary, so that will be 9/01/2009.
Now if I can find where I packed my Wedding and Engagement rings so I can start thinking about what sort of ring would go with them ? ? ? I packed them last time we moved which was about 16 months ago. (I'm waiting for DH to get them resized for me)

Me too! I was 7 month pregnant at the time....So it was a "thank you for bearing my child" and "Happy 1st anniversary" present all in one! :)

I have heard that it is either given as a first anniversary present, or on the birth of the first child.
I actually told DH years ago that I didn't want one because I thought it looked too fussy (all those rings together!), but when I was PG last year, I actually secretly hoped he'd get me a nice piece of jewellery, if not an actual eternity ring.
I thought a nice Peridot ring would be lovely (my DD's birthstone), but was surprised on Christmas morning last year with a stunning eternity ring that sat very well alongside my engagement & wedding rings.
(DH may have been guilted into it by the [male] sonographer during one of our late term scans. He was looking at the due date and said that'd be nice timing for a lovely eternity ring for Christmas!! )

I had heard it is first child or first anniversary too.
Since we are about to have our first child- and getting married in january I often joke that I want my eternity ring before my wedding ring!!! Somehow I don't think it is gonna happen!!!!!:)
I got mine on my 5th wedding anniversary as it was around the time of the birth of our first baby. But lots of my friends got their eternity rings on their 1st wedding anniversaries. You're right - it's personal choice. Interesting about the Japan-thing too!

I got mine after birth of DS#4 as my hubby believes it is for the birth of the last child. And now we are talking about #5 lol
Well my hubby thinks they are called maternity rings and that I get one for every baby
Needless to say I'm not correcting him any time soon!

I will go back to DH armed with this knowledge. I asked him about an eternity ring - first he played dumb ("huh? a what?") and then told me it was just a trick that the jewellery companies made up to make men buy more things :banghead:
For the record, my engagement ring, wedding ring and one locket are the only pieces of jewellery he has ever bought - not just for me, but ever!

I got my eternity ring after we sold our house and had the money to buy it!! As it's a beautiful (very expensive) ring, it turned out to be my 8th wedding anno present, my 30th birthday present and a thankyou for giving birth to our twins!! I don't wear it with my wedding rings though, it's on my ring finger on my right hand.

I love my engagement ring and wedding band as is, and to be honest don't think I could stand a 3rd ring on my hand ...
.... so, i have asked hubby to give me diamond studded eternity "earrings" instead :)
has anyone else done this?
I thought it was first born or first anniversary too
Seeing as my first born was about 3 1/2 yrs old at our wedding, i got it for the first anniversary
i've been told you get your eternity ring on your first wedding anniversary or the birth of your first baby . So I got mine when we had abby which was consequently before we were married

DH is getting me one for this year's anniversary (Nov 6th!!) it will be our 2nd anniversary:hugs: ♥♥♥♥

It doesn't bother me too much really, it's just jewellery. I already have 4 lovely kids (ok, so #4 isn't here yet, but that's beside the point) and I have had 10 wonderful years of marriage. Nothing else matters. :)

I got my eternity ring for our 1st year anniversary. I think you usually get it for your 1st anniversary or first child which ever comes first, well thats what I always thought.
When we celebrated our 1st Anniversary and I got the ring I actually found out we were pregnant that day:D

I reminded Dh after reading this thread that in a few months our first child will be born - his response was a bit of a surprise he said "well have you picked it out yet? Thats what you normally do, just tell me where to find it" :smiliedance:
So thanks girls for the reminder!!!
Im sure it will be a combined xmas prezzie too, or he will want an eternity "new guitar" or some other boy toy - but hey who cares!

I told my husband that I don't want it till we've been married 10 years. I just believe that's why its called an eternity ring!! (So that's February 14th, 2014, I should have kept my mouth shut!!))

I have far to much gold jewellery, so my DH brought me a sold gold bangle when DD was born as an eternity present.

i mentioned to DH at the beginning of pg 1 that i'd like an eternity ring in the near future...... instead of waiting forever like my mum (who always complained to my dad!). anyway, the day before i had DS#1 my DH decides to take me ring shopping - big no no - i was so puffy & whinghy - i gave up looking. so after i had my DS#1 & on my 1st mothers day i mentioned to dh that i'd like my eternity ring - so off we went to melbourne.....
We're getting the eternity rings when we do our re-affirmation of the vows :D

I got my eternity ring last night! We went shopping and I chose a few I liked, then DH went and chose one out of that. As I don't know which one he picked, I will get a suprise! I am going to wear it on my ring finger on the other hand as I don't want my engagement/wedding rings to detract from the way they look. It is our 1st Anniversary on Sunday and we are going away to stay at the same place we stayed when DH proposed - he is so romantic!

I have had mine for almost a yr now I got it at Mia's birth
I got mine for the birth of the boys... but I waited until my fingers went back to a normal size... which was MONTHS later (as I'd put on a 'bit' of weight)

I got mine when my DDwas born. I don't wear it on the same finger as my wedding and engagement ring tho, I wear it on the ring finger of my other hand. Firstly cause there's no room on that finger, and secondly because I wanted a different design to my other ring, my wedding ring has diamonds and I thought it would be boring to have two rings the same. So my etenity ring is totally different.

DH brought me a nice ring for our 10th anniversary a couple of weeks ago. Not an eternity ring as such, but to me it is just that. So I'll let him off the hook, lol.
I got told it was your first anniversary or the birth of your first child... well 10 days before Tyler was due I got told I'd be getting it in 10 days.... or whenever he was born..... I'm still waiting!! lol.... I brought it up the other day and apparently I get it when he gets christened..... but I think even then I'll still be waiting!! lol
