Is there anyone out there who have kids who get allergic reaction to preservatives?

I am allergic to 223 - Sodium metabisulphite. It causes my throat to thicken and makes it hard to breath.

DS is allergic to 211 - Sodium benzoate. It causes a rash on his face

And now I think DD is allergic to 202 - Potassium sorbate. It causes a rash on his face.

Now I have always been quite good at cutting preservative out only the odd one get through the cracks but the problem is Sodium benzoate is in ALL liquid medications.
How do others with Sodium benzoate get around this? At present we just give the medication when it is absolutly nessesary and watch to make sure his reaction doesn't get worse.

Can you try going to a Compounding Pharmacy to have his medications especially formulated?

I get DS's paracetamol mixture made up to order, without artificial sweeteners.

Look under Compounding Pharmacy in the yellow pages.

We could go to an allergist but since there is only 2 in Brisbane the waiting list is 2 years (regardless of if you go privetly) So our Dr has suggested we just limit his intake as much as possible and moneter him to make sure the reaction doesn't get worse.

aardvark - Thanks for that  I will definatly be looking into the nearest Compounding Pharmacy.

Jessgray - gee sodium lauryl sulphate is in almost all soaps, shampoos etc. that must be a hard one to control. I know healing hippo range have SLF free probucts

while we dont have official intolerances,

i believe myself & my youngest are intolerant to at least a handful of preservatives & additives, but
its really hard to guess what they are...:detective:

ive been interested in the failsafe diet but am soooo overwhelmed with the exasperation of it all i just dont know where to officially start...

ours are mood/behavioural reactions...
but both my sons have dermatitis that flares up here & there & youngest i thought had a dairy intolerance, but after omitting not sure.. its soooo complex...

the ironic embarrassing bit is,
i am realllly interested in learning about it all for our family & have books & research relating but get overwhelmed with all the info & where to start & i have like 10 books started  [identical trait of ADD, that i am still attempting to confirm whats what!]

Rell-yep we have QV bath stuff for ds1 and i think i may be also reacting to it or another chemical in shampoo but not sure which one. when i was little i used to get a rash that was itchy on my head that would developinto crusty weepy sores and i would scratch like i had nits and it would happen if i used pears shampoo and recently i used coles brand shampoo and the itchy head rash is back :( not fun.

indigoin0z - The more you read on addatives the scaryer it is. Some of the additives commonly found in our foods have been banned for years in other countries.

Check out these sites

My sisters DS is on a diet called the Fengold diet. It not only eliminates the addertives but also limits the amount of salisalites he has. (salisalites are found naturaly in lots of fruit and veges in varying degrees)
The improvement of her DS was amazing. His behaviour improved out of sight.

Hope this helps some

Good luck

hi rell,

thanx for the info...

the fed-up site is actually where i found the failsafe diet info..
& im a [non-active] member of the failsafe message group [can give the link if anyone is interested]...

the salicylates are actually one of the things that keeps overwhelming me, because
im trying to be healthy & natural with our diets on one hand, but then salicylates are in alot of healthy foods [vegetables/fruits]that we are now trying to live on...
its really tough deciding whats more important;
a nutritiouscly balanced diet,
or
not nutricious & very restrictive that may have less reactions... its so hard!

i change my decision each week about what i should do for the kids, & this week
after seeing their behaviour the last few days being odd after having yoghurt & frozen berries for 3-4 days consistently,
i am back to 'wanting' to know more...
but just dont know what to do! :banghead:

we would never be able to afford to see a specialist, so its all on my head...

gosh, i wish i was just ignorant sometimes...
life would be so much less effort

Hi indigoin0z
I can imagine the dilemma you are in as I have seen with my sister how restrictive the diet is.
Maybe you could just start with all the addertives and give it a month, if there is not a big improvement then try the full diet. I know there is a fengold recipe book that you can buy or even borrow from the library. Once on the full diet you can then slowly re introduce foods and moniter if they get an adverse reaction.

Good luck I hope you find the things that react with your kids
