Hi,

I have severe morning sickness and my Dr told me about this new drug that is very expensive, mainly used in cancer patients but apparently good for ms?

Does anyone know the name of it and how expensive it actually is?

Mm has it been declared safe for pregnancy?

Maxalon is an anti nausea drug safe for pregnancy/ breastfeeding might be worth a shot :)

It's called zofran. It works out to be approx. $8 per tablet/wafer but price can differ from pharmacy to pharmacy. It works wonders! I was on one 4mg wafer per day from 6-12wks. Hope that helps :)

That's the one, it's used for nausea in oncology patients - top of the range stuff. I took it for morning sickness and it was wonderful

I used maxalon when I was going through chemo for minor nausea. But it's cheap.

Zofran. Prices can range from $12 per wafer for 8mg brand name to about $3 per tablet for 4mg generic. Depends on the strength, tablet/wafer, brand or generic and pharmacy pricing.

The generic name is ondansatron :) get a script asking for that rather then zofran (the brand name) and its cheaper.

I shopped around I went from paying $190 for 5 days worth to $70 for 5 days.
If your have extras private health check out if you can claim through them, I was able to get a fair amount back!

Zofran. But it has a generic version that's a bit cheaper called ondansteron. I have had hypermesis since 6 weeks & i'm now 18 weeks, nothing else has worked for me (including maxalon) it's been a miracle drug for me, i went from not being able to function, to feeling pretty normal. As long as i take it, i have mild nausea & no vomiting. I did a fair bit of research on it & it's safe but there haven't been as many studies done on it's use for pregnancy as there have been for maxalon which is why it's a category B drug, maxalon in category A. I've known plenty of women who have taken it right through their pregnancy & had perfectly healthy bubs.

My suggestion would be to speak to your GP, he might want you to try maxalon first ?

I am on 1 8mg wafer a day (the tablets are a bit cheaper but the wafers work quicker)

You will probably be started on 4mg to see how you go.

I pay around $80 for 10 8mg wafers, so they are expensive but well worth it i believe.

Good luck :)

It is, brand names are easier to remember.

I took it earlier this pregnancy, and it was wonderful for the nausea. It has had the side effect of severe constipation in some people (me included), but at lease I was able to function somewhat normally. Definitely ask around the pharmacies for the price first. I had a script for 10 8mg tablets, one pharmacy quoted $125 and another quoted $85. Aldo if you have PHI you may be able to claim some of it back.
