My bubba boy is almost 7 months. He is bottle fed and now has one lot of solids a day. His poo is realy hard. Not nuggetty (sorry tmi) but I feel as though he strains to get it out, but only every now and then.

One day he will poo and I won't hear him at all. Then the next time he poos he will make god awful noises trying to get it out. I am worried it is hurting him, although he never seems to cry at all when trying to "go". Any advice??????

Can I give him anything else such as juice, prune juice etc???? He doesn't like to drink water, he just spits it out. Where do you buy prune juice from? (if that is the answer?)

When DD was little I would give her either gripe water...if it was more wind pain and coloxyl drops for constipation. If you go to your local chemist they can show you the best thing for your little one...I hope he feels better really soon!

puree pears or apples in his ceral every morning and extra water during the day. If you already do this then the coloxy drops for a short term solution work well too.

My DD used to get constipated early on. I used to give her prune juice and it worked a treat every time. There was one that was ready made and in those containers you screw the teat straight onto. It might have been a Heinz brand? Goodness... now I'm stretching the memory!

oh, silly me I didn't read your post properly :o I thought you said no juice :o

I just buy the normal prune juice in the small bottles from the supermarket, and dilute with water - only need a real small bit. Or even put some in his cereal.

Or here is a recipe I got from my child health nurse.

1. Remove stones from 6 prunes
2. Cover with water and bring to boil, simmer until thick and syrupy, strain.
3. Refrigerate in a sterilised, capped bottled, it will last four days.

Put on 1 teaspoon of this into 20 - 60 mls of cool boiled water, once or twice a day

I had the same problem with DD. She struggled to get it out and her bum was red raw because the poo was so hard.

Prune juice didn't seem to help with her (maybe I didn't give enough for long enough)

I ended up stewing up some pitted prunes and pureeing them. and I gave her some prunes with every meal. It took about 24 hours but nice big soft mushy poos followed and have since. (Sorry didn't mean to be graphic).:smiliedance:

Heinz make an apple and prune juice in a glass jar. I have found it hard to actually buy but have been lucky enough to find a local Spa supermarket that will order it in for me.
DS will not drink juice or water really at the moment, so I mix the apple and prune juice in with his night time veges. He gobbles it all up still and it works a treat!

The others mentioned prune juice---this always works for my DS. You can also try mixing raisins with yoghurt (blend raisins first in a processor).

If he likes papaya, then buy a real ripe one, mash it and give this to bub. Papaya always helps. :) Keep trying giving him water. It is still the best remedy IMO.
