My brothers are both colour blind. Not truly colour blind (black and white vision only) but "colour confused" (it used to be called, not sure whether it still is.)
There are different ways it can be picked up. Usually (as was the case with my brothers) there is a strong indication when learning colours. Ask the child to tell you the colour of an orange block. If he has no problems identifying say yellow, blue, purple, but has trouble with orange or green, that is a good indication. Red/Green colour blindness is the most common. The person will have trouble telling the difference between red/orange and green.
There is a test that can be done, you may have seen it. It is a picture of a circle made up of lots of green dots with a number in the centre made up of orange/red dots. If the child can tell you the number, no problem. If they can't see it at all - chances are they have colour blindness.
Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness) is a good link about it, including a similar sort of test.
The gene for this is passed down through the mother's side into sons. If your maternal grandfather was colour blind, there is a chance your sons could be.
There is a very good chance my sons may be colour blind also.

I had 2 friends growing up (brothers) who are colour blind. They get blue/purlpe/ green confused. But mosty blue & purple.
I know that is no help to you at all..... but maybe a trip to the optometrist if you are a little concerned?

My DH is red green colour blind.
It was picked up as a child when learning colours. Just to let you know he has no problems with it. It hasn't affected his life in any dramatic way. All the best
Thanks guys
especially thanks MrsMiggins for all that info :hugs:
