View Full Version : Newborn scratching with fingernails
My little angel is just 10 days old and has some rather long scratchy fingernails. Isn't it a bit early to be cutting them? I'm worried about her scratching her face and eyes. Any suggestions??

I know it sounds a bit scary, but bite them off
I chew my baby's fingernails while I am feeding him. I wouldn't cut them yet, eek scarey.

if you are worried about cutting them .. take bub to your baby clinic ... or you can simply buy some cotton mitts for your little angel... this stops scratching.. i did this for my bub and he couldnt scratch at himself..

I bite DS' while feeding. Most gro-suits these days have those fold over hand-y bits, if you don't have any baby mittens.
Yup I bit my baby's fingernails off :)
Sounds worse than it is..... :p
I have real issues with biting the nails of my DS as I am terrified of hurting him! My SIL actually even did this for me one weekend as we were all away and I had forgotten nail clippers and he was scratching himself. She managed to do it easily . It's funny, I totally didn't mind her doing this - in fact I was very grateful - but I still cannot bring myself to do it!
I get DH to trim the nails while I am feeding DS - but for the first month I just had cotton mittens.
I would go with what everyone else says though and bite them off - that way you won't end up with an irrational fear of doing so when your bub is older like I do! :D

When DD was born I wasn't sure how to cut her nails. My sister-in-law suggested filing them - works a treat! She's a bit of a wriggle-puss usually but there's at least one feed a day where she goes to sleep straight after a feed so i keep her on my lap and file away very gently and carefully. I find this a good method because you don't have to wait until they get long to cut them.
