Does my baby have asthma?

Hi everyone,

My baby had excema as a young baby but seemed to outgrow it at 3 months. I know they say that asthma and excema are often associated.

My DS is now 8 months old and early morning/night time seems to have a rattle in his chest. It doesn't seem to bother him but it concerns me. I have taken him to the doctors but because he is pretty clear during the day, they don't hear it and I think they think I am being an over protective first time mum.

I can feel it if I have my hand on his chest and it sounds like a very mild rattle, as I said it doesn't seem to bother him. It has only been happening the last 2 or 3 weeks. Is this an early sign of asthma or does he maybe just have a mild case of brochitis or something??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Asthma itself doesn't cause a rattle, the mucus which happens with asthma sometimes causes a rattle but mucus alone isn't a sign it generally needs to be paired with a cough as they try to exhale. Lots of things cause mucus beyond asthma- and really asthma is just another allergy.

My son has had breathing issues since he was born and we thought he may have asthma seeing he was rattly all that time etc we got scanns done etc and show'd up nothing we ended up going and seeing a speacilst and he said he has enlarged agnoids which would have been causing him to be rattly and snore that bad he woke up his little friends at day care, it was that bad we had to shut his door at night time.

My DD has had eczema since she was a baby.

One of DD's earliest asthma symptoms was mucus at night causing her to have overnight coughing fits to the point where she would be dry wrenching or vomiting mucous.

In saying that though, diagnosing asthma in babies is very hard which is why most specialists don't like to make a formal diagnosis before the age of 2. So we would not be able to tell you via BH! Like pp said there are other causes of mucus other than asthma.

When DD was about 14 months old she had her first asthma attack where she could not breathe and her lips turned blue. It was very scary. I would talk to your GP about referring you to a respiratory/allergy/sleep specialist who can work out what your child needs by listening to the history you tell them, not just symptoms that may or may not present themselves at the time of your doctors appt. (everytime we have seen DD's specialist she has been clear but she could tell that her airways were irritated at the first visit) your specialist will also have knowledge of other possible causes of your child's mucous which may not be asthma.

I see your on the gold coast.. Get a referral and book into see Dr Daryl Price at Pacific Private.. DD3 had the rattle on the chest from 3 months every doctor kept saying bronculitis(sp) but for months no way.. They put her on asthma meds but wouldn't class her as asthmatic, finally saw Dr Price when
She was 10months that took one listen and said asthma and then put her on the correct medication..

I forgot to say he specializes in asthma and diabetes he is also one of the head specialists for these conditions at Gold Coast Hospital..
