View Full Version : Bassinet or straight to cot?
Hi,
I'm still a mum-to-be and trying to wade through the pros and cons of using a bassinet first and then moving to a cot... or can you use a cot straight away with a newborn?
Thanks, Shaggy.

Hi shaggy,
You can put bubs in a cot straight away as long as he/she is tucked in tight further down the foot of the cot KWIM to prevent SIDS.
I have used a bassinette first off with all my bubs because one of the great benefits is that you can wheel them around the house so that he/she is close by and you can put it next to your bed at night time instead of getting up all the time if bubs is in a cot and very unsettled.. Cots aren't that mobile at all whereas Bassinettes are.
Also i found with my babies is that, when newborn they settle alot easier in a bassinette because of the confined space.
I hope this helps.. goodluck and congrats on the pregnancy. :)

Straight to the cot in their own rooms in my house. I couldn't see any advantages at all of a bassinette.

hi i put DS in cot straight away in his own room however i had a cot insert in his cot
I have a bassinet in my room which made it really easy to feed bubs during the night.... the bassinet is smaller than a cot so it doesn't take up too much room.... actually my baby is still in the bassinet and she's nearly 8 months old!
So I got quite a fair use out of my one...... :D

DD slept in her bassinet for the first couple of months because it was just easier for us. We had her in our room for a while, and we were also at the time, living in a 2-storey townhouse, so it was great to be able to cart the bassinet up & down stairs - wherever we needed it.
I actually found it a bit difficult to put her in her cot, because she looked swamped in it!! She had a few clinginess issues as well, so being all alone in that big, big cot was a little frightening for her & she didn't sleep as well in it as she did in the bassinet.
Once we decided to have her in her cot though, we bought a Tetra Snuggle Bed, which was BRILLIANT!!! I cannot recommend these highly enough!! In fact DD still sleeps in hers around at Grandma & Grandpa's house (she's looked after there during the day while I'm working).
Thanks for your feedback. I have also looked at some of the "similar threads" (yes I'm learning my way around the forum too) and there is some great advice.
I think I'm going to go for a cot with a tetra snuggle bed! Let's hope my baby agrees. :yelclap:
Cheers, shaggy.
He went straight into a cot - I live in a tiny one bedroom apartment and there's simply no way I could justify the money or the space taken up by a bassinet.
Yeah, he looked tiny when he was put into that huge cot at first but you get used to that :D
We were given a bassinet and Jess slept in it for 6 months of her life. If we weren't given one we would have put her in the cot with snuggle bed. Another suggestion is to wrap bubs if you not buying a bassinet as he/she will feel more secure

we borrowed a bassinet off of MIL's friend it was one of those old style wicker cane ones and i found it wasnt ideal for ds once he hit 2.5months lol the basinette was narrower then most and poor ds would strech out in his sleep and whack the sides and wake up screaming. so he went into the cot around then. but he also co-sleeps with me and DP.he didnt stat this till this yr lol
#2 has a bassinette that is much wider and longer it was given to us and i think we will get about 6 months use out of it by looking at it. by then ds1 will be out of his cot completly and will be in his own big boy bed lol

i had bubs in a bassinette next to my bed for the first few months until she slept through the night, then I started putting her in her cot in her room. Bassinette was great because it was easier for night feeds and as a new mum, I wanted her close to me at night, without actually having her co-sleep.
We put DS straight into the cot which was in our room next to the bed. He did look tiny in it at first but we wrapped him nice and tight so he would feel secure and never had any problems.
The snuggle bed thing is a good compromise - I didn't use one myself, but have heard good things about them.

DD was in a bassinet for a few months but is now in a cot
Cobes is still in his bassinet. I LOVE it. It's in our room so we know how hot/cold it is in there and blankie him to suit.
If he's having a rough night (or won't keep his dummy in his mouth) I put the bassinet right cup close to the bed so I can just reach in.
Recently he's been yucky sick with a cough - he's right beside me so I can hear him if he's having problems and needs a whack on the back.
In the days that he wasn't sleeping through, I'd wake up to his first whimper, so I could swiftly feed him before he woke himself right up by getting worked up.
He'll be moving to his cot very soon... it was going to be last week but he got sick :(

We had all of are babies in a bassinette next to the bed. And when it was time to go into a cot. We put the bassinette in the cot for a couple of nights, until they where used to it. They all stayed in our room until they where 12 months old.
But a friend of mine used a "Tetra Snuggle Bed" (http://au.wrs.yahoo.com/_ylt=A9FJqh3YoSRFbtUAwBwL5gt.;_ylu=X3oDMTE3czM5Njd lBGNvbG8DdwRsA1dTMQRwb3MDMQRzZWMDc3IEdnRpZANBVUMwM DFfMQ--/SIG=12aio40fv/EXP=1160115032/**http%3a//www.birth.com.au/forum/showthread.php%3fp=62827)and she love it. It a little mattress you put in the cot. But all I can tell you about it. Someone on Bubhub would know more about it.

hello
our bub is due anyday now....bub is going to sleep in a bassinet for a few months in our room and then we will move bub to a cot.....at our antenatal classes they suggested doing a gradual change to the cot so the baby does not get too freaked out by the change, so maybe a few sleeps in the bassinet and some in the cot and then eventually all sleeps in the cot...
good luck with what you choose
Hi!
Firsty congratulations! Hope that the delivery is as quick and easy as possible!
We had DS in a bassinet in our room for about 3 hours ... he was so loud that we moved him to his own room straight away ... he then slept in the bassinet for 2 weeks before we moved him to his cot.
Apparently you can put the bassinet into the cot to help make the transition easier but we just put him straight into the cot and it was pretty easy!
Good luck! :yelclap:
