Hi,
My DS is 14 months and is very smart. We communicate mostly by pointing. I ask him something like, "would you like some water?" then he nods if he wants some. He also laughs and babbles a lot. He also does some great "sound effects" when playing with his toy cars, etc. HOWEVER, he has yet to say something clearly. His "good night" is "nigh' nigh'", his "mum/mummy" is "mama", etc. He clearly is communicating and trying to talk but the words still come out unclear and sound like gibberish.
When did your baby start speaking his/her first words clearly? And do you still remember what they were?
I'm just curious to know how speech development is for different babies. :)
sorry, I cant remember, I never kept record of those things... however I have noticed DD's language skills developed earlier than the boys did. and my twins were rather late talkers as they had their own little language thing going on there for awhile

A lot of people have been telling me that girls do speak sooner than boys do. It's just that my son seems to want to say a lot of things as he looks at me and then rambles on with varied facial expressions, I was just wondering when he would finally be able to clearly say what he wants to say.
I suspect we'd have some interesting discussions when the time comes.
My boy is my best communicator. He was about 8 months when he started to speak eg. train, star as well as mummy, daddy etc. He is now 3 and speaks just as well as his 6 year old sister (they sound eeerily alike.)
Not sure about my girl - she was between 12-18 mths when she started talking more. (other than mum dad etc/) She was quiet though.
Now can't shush either of them up - just like their Dad!
My baby is slower. He is 11 months and says bub, dad and lala (his sis)
When they are ready they will never stop talking. You can give them questions to help encourage speech.

hi almond eyes, my son's nearly 21 months and has a growing list of words - some clearly said and some not so. i think his first words were clearly spoken from about 15-16 months onwards. one question - is there more than one language spoken to him? the mums in my mothers group with kids who have 2 or more languages spoken to them reckon it can take them a little longer to get talking.
kids develop at different rates. keep talking to him and pointing to different things and naming them and before long he'll talking up a storm.

My little fella is 11 months old and only really saying "dadda". He has a lauguage of his own. He points to things but doesn't really say the words, just makes them up himself. All babies have their own rate of development, try not to worry too much, soon you won't be able to keep them quiet!
EJ has said a few words pretty clearly for a couple of months now. Main words she uses at pres are mama (or mum) Dada or Dad-e and knows who is who. She also says hello clearly now. She has a few other words she says like OK (since 2 months approx), grandma, hungry and good.
She also uses bubba which is mainly used for babies or small children (and for Dorothy the dinosaur lol)
She didnt know what to call my brother when trying to attract his attention so called him mamdadabubba LOL
Im a shocker with remembering :o
Ds2 is 17 months in a bit over a week.. And he has his own very unique language :D
His favourite words are: "whats that".
