hey
I my DD was born 10 weeks early she is almost 6 and a half months but about 4 months corrected age.
Just wondering when it is right time to start solids? Is it too early yet?
Most people say it is ok now but she is still so little (i know she will always be little)
It would be good to get advice from mums who have little Premmies.
Thanks

Hi kyles84,
My DS was 6 weeks prem, and I started him on solids at 6 months corrected age.
I would encourage you to wait till 6 months corrected.
My DS was only 1.6kgs when born, but now at 13 months corrected age, he is a healthy 10kgs. They do catch up, don't stress too much about the weight thing though.
Any way, hope this has helped a little.
Take care,
Shelby.

My last son was born at 27 weeks. He is now 2 years old.

I would check with your paed as there is competing arguments on this. Some say 6 months actual age, others say 6 months corrected. With us, he really wasn't ready for solids until 6 months corrected.

Good luck

I'd look for her signs. DS1 was a month early, but I started giving him 'tastes' of farex at about 51/2 months.
DS2 was 5 and a bit weeks early and I'm planning to wait until at least 6 months (5 months adjusted). But it really depends on his signs, if he looks like he wants food, and will eat it.

hey
She is showing signs like she is chewing on everything she watches us when eat and has the chewing action.
If you start too early can that cause any problems i heard it can go to their lungs if they are not ready to digest it?

My DD was 8 weeks early and also low birth weight. I asked two different doctors and they both told me different things. One said I should wait till she is 6 months corrected and one said 6 months. But she was really interested in food so I started giving her solids at 7 months (5 corrected.) She loves eating and handled it fine. If they aren't ready you will probably tell because they will kind of gag, but you start really slowly anyway to ease them into it.
And I thought DD would always be small but she has suddenly shot up and is now a perfectly normal size. I am really surprised actually!
And I heard that when they take interest that is when they're ready. You have to judge it on them and "most" babies or books or anything. DD also took interest in us drinking and always would grab our cups and try and drink, so she can now drink from a cup too. They will let you know.

I was told to start solids at 6 months actual age....I have already started
1 solid feed a day...either farex with pear or some puree' fruit,
My boys were just not enjoying their bottle so i tried it and they were very ready! they love mango and passionfruit!! sweet gums!
Its really up 2 when the child is ready, my boys are coming up to 5 months soon and they started a solid feed at 4 months and that seems early especially if u count their corrected age but they will only have about 4 bottles a day and im lucky if they ever have more then half of each bottle!

HI...
My baby girl was born *8 weeks early she is nearly 4 months corrected, 6 months actual.
And i have just started giving her tastes, as when its dinner time she always wakes up and cries until i give her a little taste i give her some pureed pumpkin or pear as she doesnt like farex but only every 3 days or so which seems to satisfy her.
I think every baby lets you know in their own way when they are ready for solids just follow your instinct your the best person to know! I think all mums know whats best for their baby!
