If you get invited to a party and can't go, do you still have to buy a present?

I will send a card but is that appropriate enough? Not sure what to do and I don't want to be rude.

It depends who it is! If it was a close friend or relative then yes other wise no!

Tbh I don't. I have to refuse a lot of invites because I have nobody to watch the DDs. But no, even close friends and family I don't send anything. I thank them for inviting me, apologize for not being able to make it and leave it at that.

Depends on the event and closeness to the invitee. Nephew's birthday = present. Nephew's engagement = no present.

In most cases i would just politely decline the invite and leave it at that, no present.
The exceptions would be in situations where i would be buying the person a present regardless of whether a party was held or not, so close friends/family.

If it was a close family member or friend then I'd still buy a present.

Anyone else, nope. I'd just politely decline the invite, say Happy Birthday and leave it at that

Thanks everyone :) I enjoyed reading your replies. The party is a christening for DH's cousin's little boy and we're not that close, so I'll just send a card only as a way of saying thank you for the invite.

I agree, if we were closer or I was going to buy a present regardless of a party then I would buy a gift, but this is not the case this time.

Thanks again :smiliedance:
