View Full Version : Need help/advice on moving
I really need some help from you lovely bubhubbers. I have a dilemma and am really torn.
I live in WA with dh and our 4kids aged 6,5,4 and 17months. Both mine and dh parents live near by.
But...
I really want to move to Canberra. Dh wants to as well but I think me more. We have close friends in Canberra and have holidayed there lots. We plan to go next may for a couple of weeks.
Has anybody been in this situation? And what did you do?
I work as a nurse in nicu, so will have work but dh is a plumbing estimator so may not find work as easily. The kids are keen to go.
We are thinking of moving possibly in Summer of 2014/2015.
I'm just scared of 'the grass is greener' type scenario. I have made a list of pro's and con's and pro's win.
Any advice is welcomed or if anyone has psychic ability and can give me direction I would appreciate.
Thanks so much for reading this far.

Bump
TBH, I think loving a place and holidaying there is completely different to moving there.
I loved Glasgow when I lived in London. I went there loads of times, and wanted to move there so badly, but I knew it wouldn't be the same if I lived there and I didn't want my memories of the place tainted.

We moved from Newcastle to Melbourne last june/July.
We're 1100km from family. There have been moments of 'WTF are we doing?'
We'd always said we would move from Newcastle at some point.
We pretty much told family this is what we're doing, you can like it or lump it. Yes has been times when we've really needed help of some kind but we've met some awesome people who have become fantastic friends as well as friends who did the same move a month before we did.
We've really thought about moving back this last week cause of lack of day care & the sheer cost. Having family close by would make it easier. Moving back would also be stupid & costly.
For us, the grass is definitely greener. If you don't move, you'll always wonder 'what if'.

We moved from Sydney to gold coast in January and it was the best move. But we were moving closer to my mum. In some ways it does feel like we are on permanent holiday, especially now the weather is warming up.
Due to lack of work and things we may have to move, either to Sydney or to Brisbane, but we'll fight to stay here, even if it means if df can't find work he might study another 2 years, which means 2 more years on c'link. *deep breath* but if we move back to Sydney we'll be in the same position we were in, less the expense of two interstate moves in a year.
I've lived in Sydney (11 years), Darwin (6 years), Canberra (5 years), and have been back in Sydney since 2005. I LOVE Canberra. My parents and sister live in Darwin and DH's family live in Wagga. We both moved to Canberra for uni. We only moved to Sydney when DH graduated for work and have always planned to move back.
I'm not close to my family, so its not important for me to be near them. We have friends who live in Canberra, and they aren't Canberra-born. I've never been to WA, so can't compare, but I do know its a great compromise between Darwin and Sydney.
People who hate Canberra don't know anything about it. Its so easy to get around. At the moment it takes DH an hour, door to door, to get to work. We live less than 20km from the city. But nothing in Canberra is that far. He'll be able to drive to work, without actually living in Canberra, in less time.
I love that Canberra has real seasons. First year at uni, I was SO excited to see snow, my friends thought it was hilarious. Its close enough to Sydney, the coast and the ski fields if you want to visit, without having to live there.
Canberra is a planned city, and it shows when living there. Our bubs is due in May and we're planning to move back to the area in early 2013. HTH!

I would just do it. If not, you will forever be wondering about the what ifs?.
The worst case scenario is you move, it doesn't work out so you make a plan to move back home.
