Hi Pinky!

I'm a proud mum to 3 gorgeous girls and DH and I are about to try for #4 in a week or two. My youngest is 11 months and has taken the bottle since birth due to inital breast feeding problems, but has been successfully breastfed since. I've decided to begin weaning as 12 months has been a comfortable time for both mum & bub with my two older girls. Imogen has been on 3 feeds a day for a couple of months and so far it's taken me 1.5 weeks to wean her off the night time feed, now I'm slowly taking her off the lunch time feed and so far she's coping fine. How much longer for both her and myself (or my boobs!) before I can fully wean and know she's ok and it won't mess with my body too much? I really don't want to rush it with her, but I also don't want to be breast feeding and pregnant as well because I don't have the energy!

I really just fluked it with my first two and thankfully it worked out but I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing - can you help me out?!

Many thanks,
Anna

Hi Annabanana,

You are doing a lovely job of weaning gradually and taking into account how
your baby will feel as she is weaned. The rule of thumb is not to wean any
more than one feed a week as this will allow your breasts to adapt gradually
and not to unduly stres your child. Of course the more gradually you wean
the easier it will be for you both.

Some mothers find keeping that early morning feed for several weeks or even
a few months makes weaning relatively easy - eventually you simply get up
before your baby and distract her. Or, as the milk supply dwindles she may
naturally become disinterested and one day , you realise she has weaned.

You sound as though you are on track and very aware of Imogen's needs, so
take your lead from her and trust your own intuition - you know your baby
best!
